This position is designated as Moderate Risk and requires a background investigation. Unless an appropriate background investigation is already on record with the Office of Personnel Management, you must undergo a background investigation.
You must meet time in grade requirements no later than 30 calendar days after the closing date of this announcement.
Plant Pathologist: You must have a bachelor's degree from an accredited or pre-accredited college or university in plant pathology; or a related scientific discipline that included at least 20 semester hours in basic botany or plant science, and 10 semester hours in plant pathology.

In addition to the educational requirements, we are looking for at least one year of specialized experience related to this position as described below:
To qualify for the GS-09 level, you need to have at least one year of full-time experience equivalent to the GS-07 level defined as researching pesticide products (e.g. plant growth regulators, fumigants, fungicides, and antibiotics) and their effects on plant pathogens - OR master's or equivalent graduate degree; or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in the academic discipline as described above.
To qualify for the GS-11 level, you need to have at least one year of full-time experience equivalent to the GS-09 level defined as designing and implementing research experiments that measure the effects of pesticide products (e.g. plant growth regulators, fumigants, fungicides, and antibiotics) on plant pathogens - OR Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree; or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in the academic discipline as described above.
To qualify for the GS-12 level, you need to have at least one year of full-time experience equivalent to the GS-11 level defined as designing and implementing research experiments that measure the effects of pesticide products (e.g. plant growth regulators, fumigants, fungicides, and antibiotics) on plant pathogens; writing technical reports on pesticides and/or plant pathogens; and analysis of laboratory or field data on pesticides and/or agricultural crops (e.g. food, feed, fiber, oils, ornamentals, and/or industrial).
Your answers to the online assessment will be used to evaluate your competencies in the following areas: 1) Ability to work with an interdisciplinary scientific team; 2) Skill in oral communication; 3) Knowledge of plant pathology which includes treatment of disease, agricultural practices, pathogen resistance, and/or plant physiology; 4) Knowledge of Federal statutes, regulations, licensing requirements, and/or policies governing registration of pesticide products; 5) Ability to manage multiple work processes or assignments; 6) Skill in using standard data gathering, analysis sufficient to review technical information; 7) Skill in technical writing sufficient to prepare scientific evaluations.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
