President, Architects Practice Area

The Architects Practice Area has significant expertise and portfolio in the justice market segment, including corrections, courts, and public safety, and the healthcare and wellness market segment. A 150-person full-service practice, disciplines include architecture, interiors, planning, as well as access to in-house civil, structural, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing engineering and landscape architecture design; and services ranging from feasibility studies through construction administration. Across Dewberry the firm has 85 registered architects and 170 LEED Associated Professionals. The Architects Practice Area operates from Dewberry’s Fairfax, VA, Orlando, FL, Houston, TX, Tulsa, OK, Peoria, IL, and Elgin, IL, Sacramento, CA and Pasadena, CA offices. The Architects Practice Area Manager is also the President of Dewberry Architects Inc. and leads the growth of this area’s market segments, which includes developing and executing the architectural strategic plan, business development strategies, and operational performance. The President focuses the majority of his/her time on operational performance, maintaining synergy within the management group and staff, developing and executing value-added strategies for the betterment of the practice, being responsible for furthering a recognized design culture, and leading marketing efforts in collaboration with other Dewberry operating units. This position will report to Dewberry’s CEO. Role Objectives: Under the direction of the CEO, the President is responsible for the success of the strategies adopted by the Board of Directors. The President is responsible for the operational performance, overall growth of the architectural company and development of operational processes necessary to generate consistent business performance. The President represents the Architects Practice Area as part of the executive management team for Dewberry. The role of President is summarized as follows: responsible for the success of the firm in meeting its objectives of sustained growth and profitability through visionary leadership and business acumen. The person we seek will have the ability to relate and connect with people for the purpose of inspiring and empowering their lives while also bear responsibility for implementing the specific goals outlined in the company vision, and taking the company to the next level of success and growth. A primary responsibility of the President is to set, measure and evolve the marketing direction for the organization. The characteristics of the President we seek includes: the ability to openly embrace change; promote positive actions to bring about change in a constructive and accelerated way; raise any questions about changes in an open and honest manner; demonstrate flexibility; can comfortably handle risk and uncertainty during change; and help others to navigate through the change process. Also he/she needs to become aware of the need to adjust personal, interpersonal, and managerial behavior quickly; monitor others for their reactions to his/her attempts to influence and perform; seek feedback; and is sensitive to changing personal demands and requirements, and changes accordingly. The President will also be expected to be an active contributor and partner to the strategic and business direction of the other business entities in Dewberry (Engineers Practice Area, Dewberry Design-Builders Inc., and their associated operating units). General Responsibilities: Business performance to meet the annual budgeted objectives. Must have strong business development and relationship building skills. Provide leadership for the company ensuring all elements of the current Strategic Plan are achieved in accordance with the Corporate Vision. For the Architects Practice Area, develop and direct the execution of annual tactics, marketing and business plans to achieve the strategic vision and strategies. Through subordinate management ensure the successful and coordinated implementation of the corporate strategic plan. Be an appropriate fit with the Dewberry’s culture: entrepreneurial, strong business understanding, client-focused, align quality of life issues with developing strong performers. Excellent speaking and communication skills. Know how to handle pressure and has experience with responding to and managing crisis situations. Very adept in dealing with risk and conflict. Must have financial understanding and experience in improving financial practices (reduction of expenses, management to a competitive overhead, and attention to the bottom line). Consistently build company capabilities by acquiring talented associates and establishing a strong mentoring program. Ensures consistent communication link between CEO, COO, Office Directors, Market Segment Leaders, and the senior leadership of the Engineers Practice Area and operating units Maximize synergy with the Engineers Practice Area and operating units. Sales & Marketing Responsibilities: Leads business development strategies and activities within the company’s marketplace to achieve sales goals. Organizes and leads marketing efforts, assisting Principals in winning work. Demonstrates ability to see value in and potential of firm approach to clients, pursuits and projects. Maintains active participation in relevant professional organizations, to promote the firm. Confirms the firm’s understanding of the client’s goals, desires, and budgets. Promotes integrated sales/services for the full portfolio of service offerings to the clients as appropriate Coordinates and participates in meetings and presentations to clients, and fill the role of executive client manager for strategically important clients Professional Experience/Critical Skills: The successful candidate will have a minimum of 20 years’ experience to include 15 years of experience in the vertical market, leading a sector or company. Experience as a leader in a firm with multiple offices. BA/MA Architecture required. Professional architectural registration required. Excellent client relations and presentation skills. Ability to supplement Principal efforts for new business relationships through network groups and speaking engagements. Experience in navigating cultural change in a creative environment.
