University of Maryland University College (UMUC) seeks a Manager of Tutoring for the Graduate Learning Initiatives Department within The Graduate School. UMUC is one of twelve degree-granting institutions in the University System of Maryland (USM). Working adults, military personnel, and other students around the globe are achieving their academic goals through UMUC's innovative educational options, including online instruction, accelerated academic programs, and classroom-based courses taught during the daytime, evenings, and weekends. Currently, more than 42,000 students attend UMUC nationally, and an additional 33,852 students attend UMUC at on site classes in more than 25 countries throughout the world; about 56,000 students are active duty military, veterans, and their families. In 2013, UMUC had over 261,000 online course enrollments.

In The Graduate School, tutoring is provided in 12 tutoring classrooms to help students in the subject areas of accounting and finance, finance management, statistics, and writing.  From their classrooms, students can complete a simple registration process, and get access to the tutoring they seek.  There are currently 30 writing tutors, 7 finance tutors, 3 accounting and finance tutors, and 7 statistics tutors to support most graduate courses. These tutors are currently offering services to over 12,000 students in the subject areas. 

The Manager of Tutoring will manage the hiring, training, and development of tutors, and facilitate all stakeholder tutoring support requirements. The Manager of Tutoring will also manage the tutoring rooms for content and quality and collaborate with peers that support other tutoring services, working actively to identify and meet emerging support needs. This position reports to the Vice Dean of the Graduate Learning Initiatives Department.    


  • Maintain and oversee the current tutoring initiative that includes writing and quantitative tutors;
  • Hire, develop, and monitor tutoring personnel to ensure effectiveness of support services;
  • Develop capacity metrics to forecast tutoring support needs and review data analysis dashboards on tutoring effectiveness and utility;
  • Envision more innovative approaches to tutoring to better support student learning and become part of a broader university student support and retention framework;
  • Consult with all TGS programs as requested to ensure that tutoring initiatives are meeting student needs;
  • Other job-related duties may be assigned.


  • A Master's degree in a field related to education, teaching, curriculum development or management, with deep understanding of student support principles and practices;
  • Degree must be from an accredited institution of higher learning;
  • A self-starter with strong initiative and work ethic, as well as the ability to work with minimal supervision and manage details;
  • 5-7 years of professional and/or managerial work experience editing, tutoring, and managing other tutors; strong experience in writing and leadership/teamwork;
  • Excellent administrative, verbal and written communication skills; experience in managing diverse teams.


  • Background in developing and managing tutoring programs and other types of learning support initiatives to include developmental and ELL support.
