    Applicants must be able to obtain and maintain a Pesticide Applicator Certification within 18 months of start of employment.

    Basic Requirements:

    Degree:
    Horticulture; or related discipline of basic plant science that included at least 30 semester hours in the basic plant sciences, of which at least 16 semester hours were in horticultural subjects such as those dealing with the breeding, care, management, production, and post-harvest handling of horticultural crops.

    OR

    A combination of education and experience. Courses equivalent to a major in horticulture or a related discipline of basic plant science that included course work as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

    Evaluation of Education: Courses in botany, plant physiology, plant taxonomy, plant pathology, genetics, agronomy, horticulture, and similar courses may be used to meet the 30-semester-hour requirement in basic plant sciences.

    The 16-semester-hour requirement in horticulture includes course work in basic horticulture and course work related to any of the recognized subject-matter fields of horticulture, i.e., fruits, vegetables, ornamentals, nursery work, seed production, or course work in related areas of science, such as micro-biology, entomology, plant pathology, plant physiology, or genetics that is directly related to horticultural work.

    Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are:

    At the GS-09:


    Qualifying experience for GS-09 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-07 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience in the care and preservation of ornamental and landscape plant collections in an exhibit, museum or public garden display setting; and experience participating in presenting bonsai or penjing related information to a broad audience.

    OR

    Education: 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a masters degree or masters or equivalent graduate degree, if directly related.

    OR

    A combination of education and experience as described above.


    At the GS-11:

    Qualifying experience for GS-11 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-09 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience ensuring the care, proper styling and preservation of collections of bonsai or penjing that have been publically displayed in an exhibit, museum or public garden display and experience in promoting and publicizing bonsai or penjing for a broad audience with varying levels of expertise.

    OR

    Education: 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree, if directly related.

    OR

    A combination of education and experience as described above.

    AND

    Selective Factor:

    Applicants must have experience or formal education which included skill in caring and styling multiple genera of bonsai or penjing for public display in a museum, public garden, or exhibit. Applicants must demonstrate their experience as part of their application package.

    More than one selection may be made if another vacancy occurs within 90 days of the issuance of the certification of eligibles.
