AVP for Student Systems and Educational Technologies - University Information Systems

The AVP for Student Systems and Educational Technologies is responsible for managing and operationalizing the student focused applications for Georgetown University (GU), including student information systems and the core enterprise educational systems, both on premises and on-line. Reporting to the Vice President for Information Technology/Chief Information Officer, the AVP has duties that include but are not limited to:

  • Partners with administrative and academic leaders to determine the IT solutions that help them improve the delivery of their services to their constituents - to include participation in definition and business case development; analyzing and identifying appropriate applications in response to requirements, risks, and cost; planning, designing, developing, documenting, and implementing secure, cost-effective IT solutions that best satisfy user needs and that are consistent with GU policies, architecture, and standards.
  • Ensures that information security policies, principles, and practices are an integral and fully incorporated component in the applications domain; managing projects from an operational/business perspective and establishing and monitoring performance measures to ensure successful and timely implementation.
  • Manages and supervises a team of technical experts and all the applications support required for the student and educational applications currently deployed on the GU Infrastructure.  
  • Serves as the senior advisor to the GU CIO on the student and educational applications domain strategy.
  • Supervises directors in support of system upgrades, enhancements, and/or replacements; and coordinates staffing resources in conjunction with directors to ensure appropriate resource allocation.
  • Manages short- and long-term plans for management of human resources and material resources to achieve IT objectives; continually appraises applications to ascertain if they are operating effectively and efficiently, effect changes and improvements as necessary; manages the for budget for division; and has  oversight of contracts.
  • Coordinates the prioritization of work across directorates. Communicates with user community, management, and external student and faculty community on related matters in a timely manner.           
  • Manages the maintenance of current system and subsequent migrations to new student information systems, to include admissions.


  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent with relevant course-work in Computer Science, Information Systems, Project Management, or related field(s) - Master's degree preferred
  • 10 years of relevant technology management experience
  • Strong knowledge of student and educational technology systems
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, and experience working in a team environment
  • Ability to ensure quality of workforce through the development and implementation of standards and documentation as well as professional development plans 
  • Commitment to service and quality, and the ability to integrate these concepts into the unit culture. Experience in higher education or related industry
  • Strong project/personnel management and interpersonal skills 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication
  • Demonstrated proficiency in team building and staff management experience
  • Demonstrated capacity to develop and execute information systems project plans that meet requirements on time and under budget
  • Significant experience with web-based technologies

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience project management and/or systems migration
  • Significant experience with student information systems and pedagogical systems such as course or learning management systems, digital library initiatives, and/or experience in an academic environment
  • Operational experience with student and educational technology systems in a private education environment
  • Experience managing budgets, reviewing, negotiating, managing, and tracking contracts
  • Understanding of security implications of enterprise-wide systems development and maintenance.
  • Experience in working on “cutting edge” projects to service ‘enterprise' customers
