Requirements

Network Security Engineer III, Network Computing Services - University Information Services

The Network Security Engineer III is responsible for Integrated Network Operations (data, voice, video and network cabling), teams that support daily functions, ticketing, on-call, troubleshooting, maintenance, and installation and management of network cable and related infrastructure.  S/he ensures all network components are at consistent releases of software and firmware and manages network services including DNS and DHCP, and security services including firewalls and ACL's. Reporting to the Network Engineering Manager, the Network Security Engineer has responsibilities that include but are not limited to:

Operations and Change Management

  • Plans, directs, and participates in the actions of network staff involved in operational events, and scheduled and unscheduled outages and work.
  • Plans, directs, and participates in changes to the network operational environment.
  • Ensures effective and timely communication to management and staff during events.
  • Manages the gathering and reporting information in follow-up to events, such as scheduled and unscheduled changes to the network operational environment.
  • Develops, revises, and maintains change scripts.
  • Manages cable plant facilities and the network infrastructure running through them.

Network Monitoring and Systems Configuration Management

  • Works with the Operations teams to ensure all network systems and critical cable plant facilities are monitored.
  • Works with the Operations, Security, and Engineering teams to develop and enhance systems monitoring tools such as NETDISCO, a UNIX-based, open source network monitoring and management tool and the IMS environmental monitoring system.
  • Works as a member of the Engineering teams to develop and enhance configuration management tools such as SolarWinds, Nagios, Prime, and Netdisco.
  • Works as a member of the Engineering and Operations teams to improve existing network services such as F5 Load Balancing, Firewalls, DNS, DHCP, RADIUS, and VPN.
  • Works as a member of the Engineering teams on network monitoring and management tools to help repair and avoid performance bottlenecks.
  • Develops, maintains, and enhances UNIX shell and PERL scripts to analyze and interprets log data from network and server devices.
  • Works as a member of the Engineering and Operations teams to enhance and expand the environmental monitoring and alert system.
  • Works with User Services and as a member of the Engineering teams to develop and maintain cable records management system.
  • Meets with departments to develop proposals, pass them through the internal QC process, and communicate and schedule installation via Change Control.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree
  • 5 years of senior-level network engineering in a large, complex and diverse enterprise network.
  • Solid understanding of TCP/IP and network routing and switching protocols including OSPF, BGP, and MPLS
  • Experience managing security systems such as Firewalls, VPNs, and network services such as F5 Load Balancers
  • Excellent interpretive and listening skills
  • Ability to address and present technical issues to technical and non-technical staff
  • Mastery of e-mail and office productivity tools such as word processing, spreadsheets, presentation software such as PowerPoint, and engineering diagramming such as Visio
  • Basic understanding of the statistical analysis and budgeting
  • Ability to design, monitor and improve quality control procedures

Preferred qualifications

  • Cisco CCNP or CCIE certification
  • Experience with tools such as Cisco Prime, Cisco ISE, Nagios, and SolarWinds
  • Experience with UNIX environment shell scripts, PERL and tools such as CVS
  • Experience in Systems Programming/Development, Electrical, UPS and power distribution systems, and high-density cabling systems
  • Experience with automation, Ansible, and Python
