Arlington County Management Interns

Arlington County is an exciting, innovative local government entity located in Northern Virginia. We are seeking bright, highly motivated individuals who are seeking an exciting one-year Management Internship in a variety of positions across the County. These positions offer a career opportunity to qualified individuals with little or no previous professional work experience helping them prepare for a career in a variety of fields of work. This Internship will offer new college graduates and currently enrolled graduate students with in-depth, hands-on learning opportunities in areas critical to supporting a local government structure.
What you will do?
Over the course of a year, Management Interns will work under the supervision of senior staff members to gain valuable on-the-job training and real-world work experience. They will support the County's efforts to consistently work toward greater efficiency and effectiveness by offering improved processes and fresh ideas, and by leveraging smart technologies, while becoming familiar with the public sector work environment as a viable and fulfilling career path.
Who you are?
A recent (2017 or 2018) college graduate who has earned a Bachelor's or Master's degree OR is currently enrolled in a Master's degree program or will complete the requirements for the Bachelor's or Master's degree before the starting date of work. Management Interns may not have professional work experience related to the internship. In addition, the successful candidate will also meet the following criteria:

- Excellent analytical, quantitative, and problem-solving abilities;
- Ability to manage multiple projects and/or tasks and easily switch focus as required;
- Ability to research and understand technical documentation;

- Exceptional attention to detail and strong organizational and planning skills; and
- Strong customer service skills.
Department of Environmental Services (DES) 2 Vacancies
DES Training and Administrative Services. This Intern will work as a team member to support the department's Learning Management System by preparing content using Adobe Captivate and tracking training sessions. With direction, this Intern will contribute to the general administration of the Director's office, including managing the flow of correspondence; assisting with the management of the Department's Awards Program; coordinating communications and Freedom of Information Act requests across the Department; and creating templates and documents for departmental use. Location: Courthouse Plaza, 2100 Clarendon Blvd, Arlington, VA.
DES Recycling and Outreach Specialist. This Intern will work as a team member in the Solid Waste Bureau to support the engagement of multifamily, commercial and business property owners and managers in efforts to reduce waste and develop recycling strategies. With direction, this Intern will provide technical assistance to increase compliance and improve recycling among regulated communities, develop and participate in recycling and waste reduction projects, outreach, and special events, and support issuance of orders of compliance. Location: 4300 29th Street South, Arlington, VA.
Police Department. This Intern will assist in the implementation and development of the newly created Arlington Restaurant Initiative (ARI) to county restaurants with an ABC License. Under direction, this Intern will work with the Restaurant Liaison Officer to create and maintain positive relationships through community outreach with local businesses, community groups, civic associations and other county entities by reviewing County Restaurant policies and procedures to determine accreditation for ARI, researching, compiling and maintaining data collection from the Clarendon Night Life Detail and ARI Pilot program, analyzing County Restaurant use Permits Reviews, and confirm all fake IDs collected from County Restaurants. The Intern will also support the Patrol Section with the assignment, tracking and deploying equipment, tracking assignments, invoicing businesses and advertising of off duty jobs, and assist with In-Car Camera Video (ICCV) equipment and Mobile Data Terminal (MDT) issues. Location: Justice Center, 1425 North Courthouse Road, Arlington, VA/ Special Requirements: This position requires successful pre-employment polygraph examination and Police background investigation.
Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR)DPR Instructional Design. This Intern will provide support to the Workforce Development Specialist by entering and updating information in the Learning Management System, which hosts and tracks training for employees. This position will be responsible for loading users, creating enrollments, and testing usability of the online courses. With guidance from the supervisor, this position will also utilize specific software (Camtasia, Adobe Captivate, iSpring, Camtasia and Screensteps) to create new job aids and new online courses within the system. Additionally, this position will work with Subject Matter Experts (SME's) to create content for new classroom or online training. Location: Fairlington Community Center, 3308 S. Stafford Street, Arlington VA.
Selection Criteria: We anticipate filling these positions between July 1, 2018 and September 1, 2018.Therefore, applications will be accepted from candidates graduating with an undergraduate degree no later than August, 2018 and from candidates currently pursuing a Master's Degree in their field.
Minimum: Must have earned a Bachelor's or Master's degree (minimum GPA of 3.0) within the past year (2017 and/or 2018) in the following areas of study, must be currently enrolled in a Master's degree program, or must complete the requirements for the Bachelor's or Master's degree before starting date of work. Management Interns may not have professional work experience related to the internship.
DES Training & Administrative Services - Training & Development, Business Administration, or Liberal Arts.
DES Recycling and Outreach Specialist - Environmental Science, Environmental Policy, or Environmental Program Management.
DPR Instructional Design - Training and Development, IO Psychology, Graphic Design, Instructional Design, Education, or Organizational Development.
Police Department - Communication, Public Relations, Marketing, or related field or a discipline with a focus in Public Safety including Criminal Justine, Criminology, or Psychology.
Special Requirements: The Police Department Management Intern requires successful pre-employment polygraph examination and Police background investigation.
