The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the nation's most effective animal protection organization, is seeking a Director, Operations for the Animal Rescue Team (ART) department. This position will oversee the Senior Manager, Animal Care and the Deputy Director, Operations, and thus all field response for the Animal Rescue Team. Ensure staff, volunteers, equipment and other support needed to remove animals from cruel situations or those impacted by natural disaster are ready for deployment. Guide all shelter and animal care operations for our emergency care facilities, transports, rehabilitation programs. This position will be responsible for * Working with the Animal Crimes Director and the Senior Director to oversee all field response to rescue animals from situations of illegal animal cruelty; * Deploying as a core component of Incident Command for all HSUS ART rescue activities to provide on the ground leadership and operational objectives; * Managing all day to day aspects of our animal care and response programs to include fleet maintenance, supplies and inventory readiness, shelter operations and animal care; * Overseeing the response, volunteer, animal care, and DRC programs and contribute to their development and growth; * Contributing to all aspects of management for the response operations, including yearly budget, donor and report requests, etc.; * Assisting the Senior Director to drive strategic initiatives and targeted goals that further the mission of the Animal Rescue Team; * Working collaboratively with departments who have complementary or correlative issues to share best practices in animal rescue and response and advance the mission of the HSUS; * Developing, contributing, and instructing HSUS and HSUS ART training modules on investigations, rescue, response, and operation; * Attending and/or presenting at national, state, and local conferences, as requested; * Serving as Animal Rescue Team media contact and spokesperson, when assigned; * Contributing to the design and production of all Animal Rescue Team published and audio/visual materials; * Other duties as assigned., * Directly supervise and manage the Deputy Director, Operations and the Senior Manager, Animal Care; * Indirectly supervise and manage field personnel, volunteers, vendors, and contract staff when deployed.* Bachelor's degree in related field or equivalent experience in some form of emergency operations or response required; * Minimum seven years of experience as a shelter director required; * Proven supervisory and management acumen; * Knowledge of prophylactic animal health practices in a shelter environment; * Strong organizational, oral and written communications skills, including a comfort with public speaking; * Exceptional interpersonal skills; * Proven ability to liaise with governmental organizations and partnering organizations; * Ability to influence internal and external stakeholders; * Strong track record of collaboration and teamwork approach ensuring cooperation among diverse teams; * Ability to travel extensively on very short notice to assist in a disaster response as requested; * Must be able to be on the road a number of days a month and to work outside standard business hours; * Ability to work under pressure with confidence; * Ability to cope with ambiguity, make reasoned decisions with limited information available, and effectively demonstrate ability to handle emergency situations with a calm demeanor; * Demonstrated ability to adapt best practices to our organizational needs; * Ability to work independently, take initiative, and maintain good communication with other HSUS staff; * Animal handling skills and knowledge of animal protection issues particularly animals under stress; * Working knowledge and experience with NIMS/ICS or commitment to take and pass required courses within six months
