DIST SCIENTIST/ENGINEER FOR SLBM RE-ENTRY SYSTEMS

1. Knowledge and competence in the specialized areas of flight dynamics, aerodynamics, ballistics, maneuvering Reentry bodies, Reentry trajectories, Reentry performance, Reentry accuracy, Reentry body designs, and flight tests.
2. National and/or international reputation in fundamental scientific knowledge related to Reentry systems.
3. Knowledge of a broad scope of technologies in applied mechanics and thermostructural analysis methods; development, testing, and analysis of high-temperature reentry thermal protection system materials; carbon-carbon materials development; thermostructural analyses on multi-dimensional composite material structures; development of new and advanced Navy systems; development and implementation of new high temperature materials; hygro-thermal and structural issues arising from life extension of Navy reentry bodies as related to Navy Strategic Weapon Systems.
4. Demonstrated ability to conduct and lead research and development programs for Reentry systems to include planning, directing, and resolving technical issues of a complex nature relating to Reentry systems and to resolve these technical issues by leading the development and integration of new state-of-the-art techniques, theories, and concepts.
5. Demonstrated ability to assess current and projected mission requirement, capabilities, and shortfalls relative to strategies, budgets, threat analysis, and execution plans. The results of these assessments would be the initiation of new research tasks to meet the identified shortfalls, with the final result being integration of the new technology into the Reentry system.
6. Knowledge of national and international defense organizations and operations as related to research, development, test and evaluation (RDT&E) activities in Reentry systems.

Applicants must meet the following positive education qualifications requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual:
Successful completion of a bachelor's or higher engineering degree from an accredited college or university. To be acceptable, the program must: (1) be in a school of engineering with at least one program accredited by (ABET) as a professional engineering program; or (2) include differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than first-year physics and chemistry) in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics: (a) statics, dynamics; (b) strength of materials (stress-strain relationships); (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits; (f) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics. Such education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position. -or- Combination a combination of college-level education, training, and/or technical experience that furnished (1) a thorough knowledge of the physical and mathematical sciences underlying professional engineering, and (2) a good understanding, both theoretical and practical, of the engineering sciences and techniques and their applications to one of the branches of engineering. The adequacy of such background must be demonstrated by one of the following: (I) Professional Registration or Licensure: Current registration as a an Engineering Intern (EI), Engineering in Training (EIT) or Licensure as a Professional Engineer (PE) by any State, the District of Columbia, Guam or Puerto Rico. Absent other means of qualifying under this standard, those applicants who achieved such registration by means other than written test (e.g. State grandfather or eminence provisions) are eligible only for position that are within or closely related to the specialty field of their registration; or (II) Written Test: Successfully passed the Fundamental of Engineering (FE) examination), or any other written test required for professional registration, which is administered by an engineering licensure board in the various States, the District of Columbia, Guam, and Puerto Rico; or (III) Specified academic courses: Successful completion of at least 60 semester hours of courses in the physical, mathematical, and engineering sciences that included the courses specified in the basic requirements. The courses must be fully acceptable toward meeting the requirements of a professional engineering program as described in response A or (IV) Related curriculum: Successful completion of a curriculum leading to a bachelor's degree in an appropriate scientific field , e.g., engineering technology, physics, chemistry, architecture, computer science, mathematics, hydrology, or geology, may be accepted in lieu of a degree in engineering, provided the applicant has had at least one year of professional engineering experience acquired under professional engineering supervision and guidance. Ordinarily there should be either an established plan of intensive training to develop professional engineering competence, or several years of prior professional engineering-type experience, e.g., in interdisciplinary positions. OPM guidance indicates that there should be either an established plan of intensive training to develop professional engineering competence, or several years of prior professional engineering-type experience. This training plan or experience must be well documented and provided at time of application.)
Successful completion of a degree in physical science, engineering, or mathematics that includes 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics; or, a combination of education and experience in one of the above majors that includes at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
Successful completion of a degree in mathematics; or the equivalent of a major that includes at least 24 semester hours in mathematics; or a combination of education and experience demonstrated by courses equivalent to a major in mathematics, (including at least 24 semester hours in mathematics), as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. The total course work in either option must have included differential and integral calculus and, in addition, four advanced mathematics courses requiring calculus or equivalent mathematics courses as a prerequisite.
Successful completion of a degree in computer science or degree with 30 semester hours in a combination of mathematics, statistics, and computer science. At least 15 of the 30 semester hours were in a combination of statistics and mathematics that included differential and integral calculus.
An advanced degree of Master's or Ph.D. in one of the educational fields listed above is highly desirable.
