The Staff Counsel will defend cases across the Northeastern Shoreline, and will actively direct and lead litigation in jurisdictions throughout the country. This individual will have the unique opportunity to create and drive our strategy for working with outside counsel on defense. Our ideal candidate will be a self-starter, highly organized, focused, detail-oriented, and willing to travel. The position requires technical proficiency and experience defending personal injury, first party property damage, wrongful death, insurance coverage, and extra-contractual litigation. Our Legal department guides and protects the company—and serves our members—by making informed business and legal decisions based on current data and relevant information. Staff Litigation Responsibilities: This position will support cities across the Northeastern Shore and travel should be expected. The primary responsibility for this individual will be to engage, manage, and direct the work of outside counsel in other jurisdictions where GuideOne has a conflict. The Litigation Counsel is to handle all assigned litigation and other legal matters for the GuideOne Insurance companies and its policyholders. Litigation work includes but is not limited to case analysis, preparation of motions, pleadings, discovery, conducting depositions, hearings, trials, and communicating with the Claims Department. The candidate must be able to competently present the controversy at trial while maintaining the independent professional judgment required of a lawyer. The position involves busy, fast-paced, full practice with mix of commercial property, coverage, and personal injury (including catastrophic injury and wrongful death) cases. A physical office will be provided to successful candidate in a convenient location. $100,000 to $115,000 salary range, commensurate with experience Litigation Counsel must possess the requisite experience, skill and judgment required to represent the interests of GuideOne and its policyholders with little or no direct supervision. The individual will demonstrate expertise with a variety of legal concepts, practices, and procedures while relying upon his or her experience and judgment to plan and accomplish job responsibilities and goals. A wide degree of creativity and focus is expected. Requirements: Licensed or eligible to practice law in Iowa. Graduate from an accredited law school. Seven or more years of insurance defense litigation experience preferred. Trial experience required. Admitted to or eligible for admission to federal court. Able to timely handle full-time high case load with little to no direct supervision. Occasional to frequent travel required, with some overnight stays. Prior in-house experience a plus.
