Serves as part of the Case Processing Section in the Criminal Division. Processes criminal appeals to the Court of Appeals of Virginia, the Supreme Court of Virginia and the U.S. Court of Appeals from inception of appeal to return of the file from the appellate court. In addition, this position is responsible for customer service, records management, and other administrative duties as assigned. Upon receiving the Notice of Appeal, tracks all stages of the appeal preparation process using the court's case management system to ensure timely filing with the appellate court. Identify documents that must be included as part of the appellate records, while maintaining the integrity of the Circuit Court case file. Assembles orders, pleadings, transcripts, exhibits and other relevant documents to include in the appellate record. Transfers the appellate record either manually or electronically using VACES (Virginia Appellate Courts Electronic System). Processes requests for the presence of court reporters in the District Courts. Orders, tracks, and disburses the transcripts using various software programs. Maintains records and storage of all court reporter tapes and transcripts. Conducts research using the Rules of the Supreme Court, the Code of Virginia, the Supreme Court of Virginia Circuit Court Clerks' Manual, and internal working manuals. The salary offer for the position will not exceed the mid-point of the advertised salary range. Employment Standards MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience and training equivalent to high school graduation and two years of experience providing administrative support in the assigned functional area(s).

The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check to the satisfaction of the employer.

  • Associate's degree
  • Three to four years' experience in administrative support, including data entry.
  • Two to three years' experience in a court or legal environment.
  • Exceptional attention to detail, exercise tact, discretion, initiative, and independent judgment.
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.
  • Ability to perform multiple complex tasks simultaneously in a high-volume environment as well as handle sensitive information while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Must be able to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Experience in the use of Microsoft Office computer software, especially Word, Outlook, and Excel.
Requires ability to lift boxes, files and push a cart weighing up to 20 pounds. Ability to input and retrieve data from a computer. Must be able to type at least 30 wpm due to heavy volume of cases. Physical requirements can be performed with or without reasonable accommodations.

Panel interview. As part of the interview process a short question/subject will be given, and the applicants are required to type up their response within 30 minutes on the computer.
