    You must meet the following requirements by the closing date of the announcement:

    To qualify for this position at the GS-15 grade level, you must possess a J.D. and have one year of general legal experience plus three years of specialized legal tax experience, equivalent in scope and effect to the GS-14 level. An LL.M. degree in the field of the position (tax) may be substituted for one year of general legal experience listed above.

    Specialized Experience: Broad knowledge of Federal tax statutes, regulations, decisions, rulings, and precedents. Substantive knowledge of tax law as it pertains to passthrough entities, including the taxation of partnerships (including limited liability companies), S Corporations, trusts, and their owners and beneficiaries, classification of entities, passive activity losses, at risk rules, and tax shelters. Basic knowledge of tax litigation processes. Thorough knowledge and understanding of the Chief Counsel mission and organization, and the interrelationship of its programs/policies with those of the Service, the General Counsel's Office, and Treasury. Ability to research complex legal problems/matters and to analyze and forecast the ramifications of alternate resolutions or courses of action. Ability to prepare/write legal tax documents/issuances ranging from complex tax documents designed for legal practitioners to non-technical/educational materials targeted for more general use. Ability to develop and foster effective and productive communications with others, and to represent the Office in executive and professional meetings.
    • The J.D. and/or the LL.M. must be from an ABA-accredited law school.
    • Candidates must be admitted to practice law before the highest court of a state or territory of the United States; the District of Columbia; or the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico.
    The experience may have been gained in the public, private sector, or Volunteer Service.

    One year of experience refers to full-time work; part-time work is considered on a prorated basis. To ensure full credit for your work experience, please indicate dates of employment by month/year, and indicate number of hours worked per week, on your resume.

    Applicants must possess a J.D. and have one year of general legal experience plus three years of professional legal tax experience. An LL.M. degree in the field of the position (tax) may be substituted for one year of general legal experience listed above. The education generally must be from an accredited (or pre-accredited) college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

    Specialized experience may have been gained while employed in a professional legal position in the Federal, state, or local government, the private sector including law firms, or nongovernmental organizations.
