Power Plant Maintenance Mechanic - Utilities and Energy Program

The Power Plant Maintenance Mechanic performs scheduled maintenance, inspections, and adjustments to a state-of-the-art, coal fired, high pressure Fluidized Bed Steam Boiler, 3 gas/oil fired high-pressure steam boilers, 2 steam driven three thousand-ton chillers, 4 electric driven chillers, an emergency generator, and a thermal storage system.  S/he performs installations, inspections, adjustments, scheduled maintenance, and refurbishment of equipment relative to the operation of these major pieces of equipment.  Reporting to the Shift Maintenance Supervisor, the Maintenance Mechanic has duties that include but are not limited to:

  • Performs scheduled maintenance, adjustments, and inspections of Boilers, Chillers,  Emergency Generator, turbines, high-pressure pumps, and coal and ash handling equipment; cooling towers and auxiliary equipment.
  • Performs scheduled inspections, alignments and rebuilds of high-pressure pumps, turbines, chillers, compressors, pressure blowers, valves, and coal and ash handling equipment; fans and cooling towers.
  • Replaces old equipment when directed with new equipment when repair is no longer feasible.


  • High school diploma or certified equivalency
  • 4 years of related experience in the maintenance, rebuilding, and repairing of mechanical equipment, or the equivalent combination of training and experience
  • An understanding of basic electrical, piping, and machining principles and practices
  • Ability to diagnose a system problem versus a component problem

The Power Plant Maintenance Mechanic position is considered an emergency position that requires that incumbent reports to work during inclement weather at the regularly scheduled time regardless of whether the University is closed, opening late or closing early.
