THIS JOB OPENING IS BEING USED TO FILL CURRENT AND FUTURE VACANT POSITIONS IN THIS CLASSIFICATION AT VARIOUS SHIFTS, LOCATIONS AND ASSIGNED DAYS OFF
Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate, and satisfactory completion of an acceptable vocational school and/or training program in sheet metal fabrication and repair or a related field is required.
Considerable knowledge of and have performed satisfactorily in the duties of a Sheet Metal technician or related field for a period of not less than two (2) years.
Possession of a valid District of Columbia, Maryland, and or Virginia motor vehicle operator’s license issued from jurisdiction of residence.
Safe driving record with no more than four (4) points accumulated over the past three (3) years.
Satisfactorily complete the medical examination for this position, if required. The incumbent must be able to perform the essential functions of this position either with or without reasonable accommodations.
This is highly skilled and technical sheet metal work. Employee is responsible for fabricating, modifying , repairing , assembling and installing sheet metal parts , items and assemblies; metals including but not restricted to galvanized and black iron, aluminum and aluminum alloys , stainless steel , copper and brass sheets , lead alloys and bronze. The work requires an understanding of maintenance procedures and practices, metallurgy, the materials, parts and tools associated with sheet metal work on equipment in WMATA facilities.
Employees are assigned elementary sheet metal work in WMATA facilities. Employees are expected to gain familiarity with and to develop skills for fabricate and install al l types of sheet metal. Employees receive instruction and close supervision on new assignments, while regular assignments are performed independently. Work is reviewed and verified upon completion to check progress and conformance to established policies and requirements by a Supervisor, Craft Crew.
Develops patterns and layout, cut, form, join, assemble and install heating, air conditioning and ventilating pipes and ducts. Fabricates metal furniture, such as work benches and tables.
Constructs various items which have combined straight and curved edges or irregular curves and planes.
Operates hand and power machines such as slip roll forming machine, box and pan brakes, rotary machines with forming rills and crimpers, and bending machines. Calculates material requirements for assigned projects; constructs and assembles all required patterns, templates, etc., to ensure efficient use of materials.
Uses soldering and welding equipment in the fabrication and assembly of items, parts and assemblies.
Lays out sheet metal in rectangular and round duct, panels, elbows, etc.
Fabricates mechanical systems such as rectangular straight duct, rectangular radius throat and heel el bow duct el bow, equipment casing and housing, etc.
Fabricate architectural /roofing sheet metal such as batten seam metal roof panel, cap and batten, flatlock roof panel, gutters, downspouts, flashing, etc.
Fabricate specialty sheet metal such as dampers, hoppers, cyclone dust collectors, chutes, tubes and ducts.
Applies the principals of radial line development combined with parallel line development when constructing items from complex patterns.
Works from ladders, scaffolding or other high rise equipment.
Completes required documentation and reports for the repair and maintenance of sheet metal components by using the proper forms, tags or inputting data into the data information system; requisitions parts from the supply room.
Lays out work assignments, determines methods, techniques and materials needed to effectively accomplish assignments.
Attends on-the-job and formal training classes; assists co-workers in higher level positions i n their assignments or provides job specific training to co-workers in lower classifications.
Responds to and provides assistance in emergencies or incidents such as emergency snow removal.
Performs al l tasks and assignments within the established safety practices and maintenance guidelines.
May operate Authority vehicles between work locations.
Work variable shifts, days and nights as required and as provided under existing Union contract.
Performs all other related duties as required.
