SPECIFIC ELEMENTS AND ESSENTIALFUNCTIONS: 1. Assesses, plans and evaluates thenursing care needs of the patient before, during and after a surgicalprocedure. 2. Provides nursing care to the patientundergoing surgical procedures. 3. Provides comfort and support forpre-operative patients. 4. Participates in the care of patientsreceiving conscious sedation. 5. Carries out physician orders. 6. Administers prescribed medications,applies dressing, monitors vital signs. 7. Assists physician during procedures. 8. Maintains aseptic techniques andactively monitors situations which could lead to breaches in aseptic technique. 9. Coordinates the operating room withrespect to sterility, cleanliness, availability of functioning equipment andsupplies. 10. Ensures the proper handling of specimens. 11. Serves as the primary coordinator of alldisciplines for well coordinated patient care. 12. Monitors, records and communicatespatient condition as appropriate utilizing computerized documentation systems. 13. Provides age and culturally appropriatecare. 14. Orients and mentors new staff members. 15. Follows Standard Precautions usingpersonal protective equipment as required. QUALIFICATIONS: Customer service abilities including effective listening skills. Critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work withminimal supervision in a fast paced environment. Ability to perform work that requires frequent standing, bending,reaching, squatting, kneeling, moving, liftingof patients and/or equipment up to 50 pounds. EDUCATION: Required: Graduate of an accredited schoolof nursing. Preferred: Enrolled in a bachelor's ofnursing program. LICENSURE: Required: Current VA nursing license (ormulti-state compact license with eligibility to practice in VA). Required: Current certification as anAmerican Heart Association BLS Healthcare Provider. EXPERIENCE: Preferred: 2 yearsof experience in area of clinical expertise to which applying.
