Drives a variety of refuse trucks to collect refuse, brush and other recyclable material on county collection routes. Operates a variety of collection trucks in the curbside collection of residential and agency solid waste to include refuse, brush, and recyclables to include rear-end loaders, side-loaders, front-end loaders, and roll-offs. Transports solid waste to appropriate disposal facilities and transfer sites. Maintains daily pre and post trip logs of vehicles and equipment used to include mileage, fuel, and maintenance required. Performs preventive maintenance on vehicles and equipment. Inspects sites and resolve any issues which might interfere with collection operations. Provides outstanding customer service to residential and agency customers in the collection of curbside solid waste. Maintains effective relationships with citizens, employees and supervisors.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Responsibilities:
  • Uses effective communication skills to provide oral and written instructions.
  • Engages in safe working practices and complies with safety programs and guidelines established by the Department of Public Works and Environmental Services and the Solid Waste Management Program safety programs and guidelines.
  • Reports for duty on time in proper uniform and physical condition.
  • Maintains assigned vehicles for cleanliness and is in good working condition
  • Adheres to the Department of Public Works and Environmental Services guiding principles.
  • Maintains the standards of the County, including but not limited to the Drug & Alcohol, safety, and personnel policies and procedures.
  • Ensures compliance to all applicable Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and Department of Transportation (DOT) laws and regulations.
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to completion of the tenth grade; plus three years of experience operating motorized construction equipment and/or semi-tractor trailers, as appropriate.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:Five or more years of operating refuse equipment. Experience as a crew leader or route foreman. Exceptional safety and driving record, with at least five years accident-free driving. Excellent problem solving, customer service, and communication skills.
Class "B" or higher commercial driver's license (CDL) is required for this position.

Duties are performed with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Climbing on to heavy equipment.
  • Walk, stand, bend on a regular basis.
  • Lift up to 50 pounds with or without assistance.
  • Ability to work in work in adverse weather conditions.
  • Ability to perform sedentary tasks.
  • Ability to coordinate eye, hand and foot movement in order to operate motorized vehicles.

NOTE: Is required to report to work during extreme inclement weather or other emergencies, including after-hours and weekend work during emergency incidents to fulfill emergency service duties.
