Job Title: GARDENER (FULL PERFORMANCE/TRAINEE) Closing Date/Time: Thu. 02/22/18 11:59 PM Eastern Time Salary: $35,110.40 - $53,643.20 Annually
Job Type: Full-Time Location: 2700 South Taylor Street, Arlington, Virginia       Arlington County's Department of Parks and Recreation is seeking an experienced gardener to become part of a team that creatively develops outdoor spaces for the community's enjoyment! The employee prepares, installs and maintains landscape beds, assists in planning new landscape areas, maintains plants within County-owned parks, streetscapes, gardens, facility grounds, and other public areas. Additionally, this position provides technical horticultural information and advice to staff and the public on garden-industry best practices and on the science behind gardening, designing and landscaping. 

Specific duties include:
  • Operating small power tools and equipment to install and maintain landscape beds, natural woodland areas and trees in parks and on streets;
  • Monitoring the growth, development and functionality of landscapes at County sites;
  • Performing diagnostic horticultural work to monitor plant health, managing weeds and other pests; which requires a pesticide license;
  • Driving various vehicles, including pickup trucks, trailers, and trucks requiring a Commercial Driver's License (CDL); and
  • Collaborating with other team members on landscape maintenance and installation, tree planting, and insect/disease control.
The ideal candidate will have strong interpersonal skills to facilitate a collaborative and team-focused work environment, an understanding of various types of plants, their uses, and cultural requirements. Additionally, the candidate understands pruning guidelines, pest and disease management, soils and environmental requirements needed to maintain the health of plants.
 Selection Criteria: Full Performance Minimum: High school diploma or equivalent plus considerable experience in landscaping, gardening, horticulture or related field, which includes insect/disease and weed control.

Trainee Minimum: High school diploma or equivalent plus eighteen months of experience in landscaping, gardening, horticulture or related field, which includes insect/disease and weed control.

Substitution: Additional years of experience in a directly related field may be substituted for the education requirement. A college degree in landscape design, horticulture or a related field may be substituted for up to two years of the experience requirement.

Desirable: Preference may be given to candidates with one or more of the following:
  • Certification from industry associations (PGMS, ISA, NALP, VNLA, or similar).
  • Experience with plant ID, and knowledge of their uses and cultural requirements.
  • Formal horticultural training.

 Special Requirements:
  1. Any offer of employment will be contingent upon passing a pre-employment drug screening and alcohol breath test as required by applicable standards. The successful applicant will be subject to drug screening, at such times during employment, as required by federal, state and local standards and policies.
  2. Applicant must authorize Arlington County to obtain, or provide, a copy of the applicant's official state/district driving record.
  3. Applicant must obtain a valid Virginia Registered Technician's License within 90 days following appointment to this position if the applicant does not already possess a valid Certified Pesticide Applicator's License (Category 3A, 3B, or 6) or registered technician's license with the state of Virginia.
  4. Applicant must possess and maintain, or obtain within six months of appointment to this position, a category "A" or "B" commercial driver's license from the applicant's place of residence. Any offer of employment will be contingent upon a favorable review of the applicant's driving record.

 Additional Information: Work hours are typically 6:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. However, the employee will be required to work some weekends and evening hours, and must be available for callback and hold-over in emergency situations.

This employee will be hired at either the full performance or trainee level. For the trainee level, a training period of no longer than 18 months will be established. During the training period, the employee will receive assignments designed to prepare the employee for the full performance level. At the end of the training period, the employee must meet experience, training and proficiency requirements for the full performance level position. When the employee attains full performance level, the probationary period will begin. The salary for the Trainee level starts at a grade 4.

The work environment includes exposure to drafts, varying weather conditions of heat and cold, noise, dust, grease, and dirt with extended periods of standing, walking, bending, crouching, and lifting light to very heavy objects and equipment.
