Job Title: CONSTRUCTION WORKER Closing Date/Time: Thu. 02/22/18 11:59 PM Eastern Time Salary: $31,449.60 - $53,643.20 Annually
Job Type: Full-Time Location: 2700 South Taylor Street, Arlington, Virginia       The Department of Parks and Recreation is hiring an experienced and multi-skilled construction worker to be part of a team that provides repairs, maintenance, and construction services in parks throughout Arlington County. Team members use a wide variety of concrete, asphalt, and carpentry skills and techniques to work on projects including the building, maintenance, and repair of basketball courts, tennis courts, trails, and small structures and buildings. The employee will perform the most complex or critical aspects of the team's work while providing technical guidance and training to team members.  

Specific duties include:
  • Providing technical guidance regarding the proper safety and operation of powered and manual tools, instruments, equipment and machinery;
  • Estimating, ordering and coordinating supplies and materials required for specific jobs;
  • Reading blueprints and managing work orders on a computerized system to understand construction techniques, technical specifications, and equipment and supplies needed;
  • Conducting routine repairs on playground equipment;
  • Operating and driving light and heavy equipment including dump trucks;
  • Assisting in general administrative functions of a crew including filling out work logs and reports; and
  • Participating in snow removal operations.

 Selection Criteria: Minimum: Experience performing general labor functions including at least six months' experience performing construction using concrete, asphalt, and carpentry techniques.

Desirable: Preference may be given to candidates with experience using computerized systems to receive, monitor, and update work orders.
 Special Requirements: Applicant must possess, or obtain within six months of appointment to this position, a category "A" or "B" commercial driver's license from the applicant's place of residence. Anyone hired without this license will be appointed as a "trainee" in grade 4, until the license is obtained. Any offer of employment will be contingent upon a favorable review of the applicant's driving record. 

The salary at the top of the announcement reflects the entry salary at the trainee level to the top of full performance level. The salaries for the two levels that employees can be hired at are as follows:
  • Trainee (Grade 4): $31,449.60 - $48,027.20
  • Full Performance (Grade 5): $35,110.40 - $53,643.20
Prior to the time of appointment, the successful applicant must pass a pre-employment drug screening. The successful applicant will be subject to drug screening, at such times during employment, as required by federal, state and local standards and policies. Any offer of employment will be contingent upon a favorable review of the applicant's driving record and passing a pre-employment drug screening and alcohol breath test as required by applicable standards.
 Additional Information: Work Hours: Typical work hours are Monday through Friday, from 6:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Employees must able to work occasional weekends if needed and be available for call back in emergency situations.

Work may be performed outdoors in all types of weather conditions. The work environment includes exposure to drafts, noise, dust, and dirt with extended periods of standing, walking, bending, crouching, and lifting light to very heavy objects weighing up to 50 pounds.

The official title for this position is "Trades Worker IV."
