Early Literacy Services Coordinator (Librarian II)
Coordinates the library's overall role in preparing children for learning to read. Works with 20 or more branches of the library and in all areas of the county to coordinate and/or provide outreach and branch programming for children ranging from birth to 5 years of age. Analyzes effectiveness of programming efforts, goals and objectives; summarizes findings and recommends improvements; identifies partnerships and funding opportunities. Represents the library in cooperative efforts with other county and state agencies and nonprofits to support local, regional and national early literacy initiatives and programs. Provides training to branch staff and caregivers in early literacy techniques. Provides early literacy resources and publications to encourage using the library and reading to young children. Trains and supervises Early Literacy Assistants and story time volunteers to enhance early literacy outreach efforts. Performs other duties as may be assigned to further the goals and objectives of the Fairfax County Public Library.Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities Knowledge of professional library science;
General knowledge of statistics and budget preparation;
Ability to plan and schedule workload;
Ability to effectively train and supervise others;
Ability to promote interest in library services;
Employment Standards EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS:
Graduation from college and a Master's degree from an accredited library school and one year of professional library experience.
CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
Possession of a certificate issued by the Virginia State Board for Certification of Librarians within three (3) months of date of appointment to the position. Valid driver's license.
Two or more years of professional library experience. Two or more years of professional experience in early childhood or elementary education. Experience planning, developing and facilitating programs and events for children. Experience planning, developing and facilitating training sessions with adults. Experience working in partnership with other agencies and organizations. Expertise in public speaking. Knowledge of children's literature and early literacy concepts. Ability to establish priorities, work independently and proceed with objectives with limited supervision. Ability to use a personal computer, email and various software packages. Excellent written and verbal communication skills
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to the position will be required to complete a criminal background check and driving record check to the satisfaction of the employer.
Ability to lift up to 25 pounds. Ability to input, access and retrieve information from a computer. Ability to operate a motor vehicle. Ability to travel to various locations throughout Fairfax County. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
