Job Type: Full-Time Location: Thomas Jefferson Center - 3501 S. 2nd Street, Arlington, Virginia       Arlington County's Department of Parks and Recreation is looking for an Art Studio Technician to work at the Thomas Jefferson Community Center. This position is within the Office of Creative Resources (OCR), which provides comprehensive programs of recreational and leisure services for Arlington County residents, to include specialty arts. The Technicians' primary function is to manage the daily technical operations and maintenance of the studios' equipment. This employee will work with students, instructors, internal staff, external staff and patrons who use the studio for a variety of programs.  

Specific duties include:
  • Maintaining and preparing studio workspaces for scheduled classes and activities, to include mixing darkroom chemicals and ceramic glazes, recycling clay, stocking jewelry making equipment, inspecting workshop tools, and cleaning and organizing the artwork storage space;
  • Compiling a variety of records and metrics to include attendance, material usage and sales of supplies, utilizing Microsoft Office programs;
  • Maintaining the schedule of facility monitors to ensure coverage of the Art Studios during operating hours;
  • Creating promotion materials and marketing programs to the community;
  • Managing the ceramic kilns to include developing a firing schedule and loading and unloading pieces through the various stages of firing;
  • Monitoring inventory and ordering supplies for programs;
  • Orienting new users on the features and safety requirements of the studio;
  • Performing a variety of safety inspections and tasks such as conducting regular inspections of equipment, to include kilns, ceramic equipment, fire extinguishers, eye wash stations, acetylene tanks and ventilation filters;
  • Scheduling and tracking preventative maintenance on all equipment according to pre-defined maintenance schedules while updating and maintaining Material Safety Data sheets for all locations.

 Selection Criteria: Minimum: Completion of the requirements for graduation from an accredited college or university with a degree in art, or a related field plus experience administering or providing support in recreational or educational art programs. Must be able to lift 50 lbs.

Substitution: Additional related experience may be substituted for the college requirement, on a year-for-year basis.

Desirable: Preference may be given to applicants who possess experience in one or more of the following:
  • Technical education or experience working in a ceramics studio or woodshop;
  • Monitoring the safety of studio equipment;
  • Utilizing Microsoft Office to include Excel, Word and Publisher;
  • Metalsmithing or photo darkroom;
  • Loading kilns and mixing glazes.

 Special Requirements: Personal transportation and the ability to travel from site to site is a requirement of the job. The applicant must possess, or obtain by the time of appointment, a valid motor vehicle operator's license from the applicant's place of residence or have the ability and willingness to use alternative methods of transportation to perform assigned duties and responsibilities at locations other than the primary worksite. 

This position requires frequent visits to other sites and includes the transport of materials and equipment. If the applicant possesses or acquires a license, the applicant must authorize Arlington County to obtain, or the applicant must provide, a copy of the applicant's official state/district driving record. Any offer of employment may be contingent upon a favorable review of the applicant's driving record.
 Additional Information: Work Hours: 40 hours per week; daily schedule varies due to program requirements. Periodic weekend and evening work is required.
