Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS), the nation’s 10th largest school district, located in suburban area just outside the nation’s capital, is seeking a dynamic individual to serve as a Carpenter I within the Department of Facilities and Transportation Services. This individual will perform the skilled journey-level work required to construct, maintain, and formulate finished and rough carpentry repairs internal or external to a structure.
The ideal candidate will need any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school, supplemented by an acceptable apprentice-level carpentry-training program, plus three years of progressively more responsible experience in carpentry, two years of which shall have been at the apprentice II or equivalent level. Can demonstrate knowledge of methods and skills in the use of carpentry equipment, materials, and tools; knowledge of common hazards and necessary safety precautions; knowledge of local, state, and national codes; ability to read and interpret instructions, diagrams, sketches, blueprints, and manufacturers' manuals; capability to estimate time and material needs, determine when repair is not economically practical, and perform routine tasks and arithmetic computations; knowledge of basic computer skills; and strength and dexterity necessary to perform all required tasks including lifting, stooping, bending, and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Valid driver's license with a good driving record. May be required to work an evening and/or night shift on a regular or rotating basis, accept call-back overtime or regular overtime, and/or agree to assume an emergency call-out list status.
