The Kingsbury Center is one of the oldest nonprofit educational institutions in the Washington area that addresses the special needs of young children, adolescents and adults who experience learning difficulties. The Center is seeking a Senior Staff Accountant.

Responsibilities for this position also include:

  • Support Chief Operating Officer in carrying out the responsibilities of Finance Department, to include preparation, processing, maintenance, reconciliation and verification of accounting documents and records such as payroll, accounts payable/receivable and other accounting related assignments and duties
  • Prepare monthly financial statements, reports and records by collecting, analyzing and summarizing account information
  • Assist in budget preparation
  • Support month end and year end close process
  • Prepare financial reporting, forecasting and profitability on a requested basis
  • Research and reconcile all discrepancies
  • Audit and verify documents
  • Insure proper recording of invoices
  • Manage petty cash account
  • Conduct monthly operating account and petty cash reconciliations
  • Assist and prepare for financial and 403(b) annual audits; provide information, reports, schedules and supporting documents to auditors
  • Document and monitor internal controls according to generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP)
  • Monitor customer accounts for non-payment, delayed payments and other irregularities
  • Manage tutor and related services accounts, prepare invoices and conduct monthly reconciliation of service hours and authorizations
  • Follow established procedures for processing credit card, cash, receipts, etc.; book payments in QuickBooks
  • Prepare bank deposits
  • Investigate and resolve vendor and customer account disputes and inquiries
  • Develop and implement a recovery system and initiate collection efforts on aged accounts
  • Post expenses to appropriate accounts


  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field, Master’s degree preferred
  • MBA or CPA certification is a plus
  • Experience in non-profits and education is a plus
  • Knowledge of GAAP and methods, practices and terminology used in general accounting and financial recordkeeping, to include knowledge of payroll
  • Ability to post financial data and make accounting computations rapidly and accurately
  • Comfortable with information technology, spreadsheets, computer applications and web-based software
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Ability to make informed decisions based on data and statistics
  • Competent in developing systems and processes within an organization to improve functionality
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
