PenFed is hiring a Senior Engineer, Information Security in our Chantilly Datacenter located in Chantilly, VA. The primary purpose of this job is to develop and manage an integration roadmap for Security Operations Center (SOC) personnel.  Integration of our security tools to the Security Operations Center requires a focus and discipline to understand data movement, collection and behavior of technologies at PenFed. Provide a "single-pane of glass" for CIRT (Cyber Incident Response Team) enhancing their performance, visibility and effective action of incidents within PenFed's portfolio of applications on premise and off-premise.


Essential Functions

    Apply a set of disciplines for planning, analyzing, and designing SOC information systems and integration across a major sector of PenFed information security technology portfolio allowing SOC personnel to detect, manage and respond to events that could affect our security posture. Develop and recommend technical integration solutions to support SOC requirements in solving moderate to highly complex alerting, log aggregation for network and system security problems. Apply analytical and engineering/integration solutions based on system and application behaviors to determine the intel that must be collected on PenFed applications enhancing visibility of all behaviors normal and abnormal.  Must be well versed in behavior of compute, software and networking technologies. Engineer scripting to automate information tagging, information sharing and automate blocking, quarantining and reporting to KPI's and third party management systems. Assist in the investigation of security incidents as required, and recommend corrective actions and process improvements. Research emerging technologies and maintain awareness of current and trending security risks in support of the security enhancement and development efforts.


Education and Experience

Equivalent combination of education and experience is considered.

    Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Security or Business. Minimum of fifteen (15) years’ experience in Information Technology and/or Information Security. Minimum of three (3) years’ experience in software engineering using dynamic programming languages and related technologies including several of the following: .NET (C#, VB), Java, Soap, Restful, APIs, XML, SQL, Python, PowerShell. Demonstrated ability to perform complex problem solving and creative solution design. Strong Knowledge in application architectures, behavior and integration practices. Strong understanding of PenFed’s systems and application architectures preferred. Strong understanding of TCP/IP and network concepts and topography. Knowledge of application monitoring and event management. Experience with security tools such as log analyzers and aggregators, network tracers, and vulnerability scanners. Knowledge of ITIL disciplines such as Incident, Problem and Change Management. Strong analytical and problem solving skills including the ability to understand the goals and methods of an attacker. Ability to multitask, organize and prioritize multiple efforts to meet deadlines. Project management skills and ability to track and report progress. Excellent written and verbal communications skills and demonstrated ability to write with purpose clarity and accuracy to both technical and non-technical audiences including senior leadership.

Supervisory Responsibility

This position will/will not directly supervise employees.

Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to an indoor office setting with moderate noise.

* Most roles require working in an office setting with moderate noise and the ability to lift 25 pounds.*



Limited travel to various worksites and be on-call is required.
