ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION
The Upper Occoquan Service Authority (UOSA) is a regional water reclamation plant serving four jurisdictions (Fairfax County, Prince William County, City of Manassas and City of Manassas Park).
The Chemist I or II supervises laboratory analysts and technicians ensuring that the appropriate testing is conducted according to regulatory requirements and laboratory standard operating procedures. The position requires an experienced, professional who has the demonstrated ability to independently manage laboratory operations and/or analytical projects. Oversees inventory control of equipment, chemicals, glassware, and consumables; assists in developing the annual laboratory budget and manages the schedules for all testing stations. Responsible for systems administration of the Laboratory Information System (LIMS) and associated software and data maintenance or enhancement functions (i.e. custom reports). Conducts laboratory analyses and related work on assigned stations when necessary. The Chemist position may manage the laboratory in the absence of the Manager and Chemist I. Work is performed under the general direction of the Laboratory Manager.
The Chemist I or II is responsible for understanding and implementing the requirements of the UOSA Laboratory’s state certification program, solves difficult analytical and operational problems, prepares monthly laboratory analytical schedules for technicians and analysts, corrects/counsels personnel on performance; develops evaluation criteria for supervised positions; evaluates staff performance, and performs analytical testing as needed. Reviews regulations concerning POTWs, landfills, hazardous and solid waste, and biosolids that require analytical testing and prepares related assessments or reports. Fulfils LIMS administrator tasks, resolves LIMS problems, and interacts with LIMS vendor and UOSA IMS personnel on LIMS issues. Provides input for the annual and quarterly budget reviews.
- Chemist I: Must possess considerable technical and managerial experience; possess a BS in Chemistry or Biology from a recognized four-year college or university; or any equivalent combination of education, experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
- Chemist II: Must possess considerable technical experience; possess a BS in Chemistry or Biology from a recognized four-year college or university; or any equivalent combination of education, experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
- Possession of a vehicle operator’s license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia is required.
- Must be able to meet physical requirements of position to include extensive walking, bending, stooping, climbing of stairs and ladders, lifting and/or carrying up to 30 pounds.
