Budget Director, Finance & Administration - Walsh School of Foreign Service

The Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service (SFS), founded in 1919, is a premier school of international affairs. At Georgetown's Washington, D.C., and Qatar campuses, SFS provides a rigorous education grounded in both theory and practice while instilling the Jesuit values of service.

The Budget Director handles budget management, analysis, and reporting for SFS, and maintains budget data and advises on any issues that may affect the efficient operation of all departments within the SFS. Reporting to the Associate Dean for Finance and Administration (ADFA), the Budget Director has duties that include but are not limited to:

Planning and Budgeting

  • Initiates the annual planning and budgeting process under the leadership of ADFA.
  • Assists ADFA with development and reconciliation of the annual budget, providing financial analysis necessary to make informed decisions.
  • Conducts risk-based analysis to assess SFS risk profile in relation to capital and earnings.
  • Manages and maintains the position budget for SFS faculty and staff.
  • Ensures that the database lists all approved positions in SFS and accurately reflects current staffing, salaries and cost center distributions.
  • Ensures that operating budgets reflect compensation levels as identified in the database.
  • Tracks annual salary adjustments by merit increases, promotions, equity and other adjustments.
  • Prepares and processes budget revisions as and when required.

Financial and Management Reporting

  • Generates monthly variance reports and budget to actuals reconciliation (BAR) reports, year-end projections, and other reports as necessary; where variances exist, follows up with business manager/program administrator for explanation and ensures that appropriate actions are taken.
  • Prepares monthly management reports for review by SFS Dean and ADFA.
  • Proactively monitors special funds' performance and alert ADFA and Dean on opportunities and threats.
  • Manages Walsh SFS GMS cost centers and costing allocations.
  • Ensures compliance with, and reconciliation to, the University financial system and reconciles main SFS Dean's Office cost centers.
  • Reconciles transactions for specific cost centers and follows up on questionable transactions.
  • Submits monthly special funds reports and manages all GMS financials role change requests.


  • Bachelor's degree in business, accounting, or finance - Master's degree preferred
  • 5 years of financial management experience, preferably in a university or other non-profit organization
  • Proficiency with University systems including Workday financials, as well as advanced knowledge of Excel
  • Command of general business practices as they apply to the institution
  • Ability to interpret and apply complex policies and procedures, develop innovative approaches, and adapt to changes in policies and technologies
  • Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills, a strong orientation to detail, deadlines, and customer service
