Job DescriptionTheUniversity of Maryland, Baltimore School of Medicine is seeking a MedicalTechnologist for the Department of Radiation Oncology. Under generalsupervision, this position performs preclinical laboratory tests on veterinary research samples. This position analyzes, interprets and ensures accuracyof test results. The Medical Technologist will work in theDivision of Translational Radiation Sciences (DTRS). DTRS was created to fostercollaboration among the many disciplines of Radiation Oncology such as photontherapy, proton therapy, medical physics, research physics and radiobiology.The mission of DTRS is to accelerate the discovery and clinical implementationof new therapeutic strategies to improve tumor response in clinical therapy, maximizetechnology to facilitate patient care outcomes, minimize post-therapycomplications, and mitigate/treat the life-threatening health effects of aradioactive or nuclear agent. Primary Duties1. Operates complex automated analysis equipment; certifies and correctsmalfunctions of equipment and instrumentation, and performs regular maintenancein accordance with established procedures.2. Determines suitability of test samples, records test data, makes statisticalcalculations, prepares test reports, and answers routine questions with area ofcompetence for medical personnel and others.3. Compares laboratory results with normal values and investigates atypicalresults to determine cause.4. Ensures proper preparation and replacement of chemicals and reagents,evaluates new diagnostic kits and procedures, participates in assuring qualitycontrol and performs efficiency testing.5. Assists in research, development and implementation of laboratory testingprocedures.6. Records, calculates and plots known control values on technical instrumentsto ensure their reliability and accuracy in reporting results. Regularlycleans, performs routine maintenance and calibrates instruments and equipment.Note/: The intent of this list of primary duties is to provide a representativesummary of the major duties and responsibilities of this job. Specific duties and responsibilities mayvary based upon departmental needs.Education/: Successful completion of a medicaltechnology program accredited by the Committee on Allied Health Education and Accreditation(CAHEA).Experience/: One year as a medical technologist. Other/: Certification by theAmerican Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP). Required Knowledge/Skills/AbilitiesComprehensive knowledge of applicable safety, quality control, and specimenhandling guidelines and procedures. Skill in using applicable laboratoryequipment such as centrifuges, meters, microscopes, incubators, pipettes,autoclaves, and sterilizers. Ability to work quickly and accurately when understrict deadlines; to wear and work in personal protective equipment.Other/: Except for qualifications established by law, additional relatedexperience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills,and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may besubstituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-yearbasis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.
