Job Description of Veterinary Technician Veterinary Technicians are under the direct guidance and supervision of the Technician Supervisor and Doctor(s). Incumbents of this position are required to assist the specialists to the fullest possible extent, to help improve the quality of care given to the patients of Atlantic Veterinary Internal Medicine & Oncology and to aid the practitioners in achieving greater efficiency by relieving them of technical work and administrative detail. In addition to the doctor(s), veterinary technicians report directly to the Head Technician/ or Technician Supervisor. MAJOR DUTIES: In-Patient Medical Care - give medications, assist or perform treatments, diagnostics & monitoring, place IV catheters, draw blood, run lab tests, administer IV fluids, cleaning, feeding, and walking patients as needed. Maintain ability to prioritize and initiate tasks through the day to keep the day successfully moving Anesthesia induction, maintenance, monitoring, & recovery of patients, clean / maintain anesthesia equipment Surgery - Surgical prep, doctor assistance, clean, sterilize, and maintain all surgical instruments and OR equipment Radiology (including dental imaging)- positioning patients and taking radiographs, submitting for consults Laboratory duties - collecting, preparing, & running or submitting samples for requested tests; reading and recording results when indicated (Chem/CBC, PT, PTT's, Cytology's, biopsy's, fecal, Urines, Ear cytology etc) when requested by doctor Preparing invoices , discharge instructions, and client information packs Client communication- give patient updates, discharge instructions, and provide follow-up for certain hospital patients. Client medical demonstrations / education Technician appointments/ outpatient appointments - blood draws for therapeutic monitoring / screening tests, bandage changes, post-op checks, suture removals, AG, NT Clinic technician- assisting doctor with outpatient appointments, preparing, restocking, cleaning exam room, check patients in and out, take vitals, input data into patient medical record, ensure a smooth and timely flow of outpatient appointments from the check-in to the discharge Assist with reception / front desk duties as needed- answering phones, booking appointments, admit / discharge patients, communicating with clients about in hospital patients, calling clients to arrange discharge times, follow-up on patients that had a procedure the day before, calling in prescriptions to pharmacies Assist in training and mentoring new team members Assist with inventory control , restocking drug & medical supplies, notify inventory control technician when supplies are getting low Preparing prescriptions , dispensed medications & medication refills from in house pharmacy or external pharmacies Maintain a professional appearance while at work, wearing AVIMO uniform and nametags on a daily basis Promote positive attitude among staff Be willing and available to stay late or through breaks when needed to assist with emergency or critical-care patients Show respect for clients, team members, and animals (alive or deceased) at all times Physical strength and ability to stand for an entire shift when needed, maintain ability to lift pets and objects weighing up to 50 pounds without assistance. Assist in lifting patients weighing more than 50 pounds. Participate in all staff meetings Maintain strict confidentiality regarding clients and patients for whom the practice provides veterinary services Be prepared to handle pet or facility emergencies that may arise, including dog or cat fights, choking or strangulating animals, and facility fire or weather-related emergencies. Follow contingency plans Follow established facility closing procedures to ensure security of all patients, staff, data, revenue, inventory and the building. WORK ENVIRONMENT While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to hazards associated with aggressive patients; hazards associated with infected animals and controlled substances; exposure to unpleasant odors and noises; exposure to bites, scratches and animal wastes; possible exposure to contagious diseases.
