Our client, the Armed Forces Health Surveillance Branch (AFHSB), strives to be the central epidemiologic resource and a global health surveillance proponent for the US Armed Forces. The AFHSB provides timely, relevant, actionable, and comprehensive infectious disease surveillance information to promote, maintain, and enhance the health of military and military-associated populations. We are seeking a Laboratory Systems Specialist to support the Global Emerging Infections Surveillance Section of AFHSB. The primary role of the Laboratory Systems Specialist will be to provide expertise on infectious disease laboratory methodology to enhance the GEIS surveillance network and improve AFHSB health surveillance guidance documents. Responsibilities: * Serve as subject matter expert on infectious disease testing, clinical laboratory testing, lab quality, biological safety and regulatory requirements in support of the GEIS network and AFHSB health surveillance * Maintain awareness of DoD and non-DoD laboratory capabilities and FDA-cleared assays for infectious disease of military relevance and emerging threats of concern, particularly as it relates to the GEIS network * Make recommendations regarding the standardization of laboratory data within the DoD, specifically within the GEIS network * Review GEIS partner laboratory work plans, project proposals, and periodic reports for scientific and technical quality and provide subject matter expertise to guide funding decisions within the GEIS portfolio * Provide subject matter expertise in laboratory testing for GEIS focus area priorities in antimicrobial resistance, enteric infections, febrile and vector-borne infections, and respiratory infections * Contribute to the development and updating of detection and reporting guidelines to improve surveillance for militarily-relevant pathogens and conditions * Develop and maintain a database of GEIS Partner laboratory equipment and capabilities, including next-generation sequencing platforms * Provide guidance for harmonizing laboratory methodology and platforms for specific syndromes and infectious disease etiologies across the GEIS network * Utilize communication and interpersonal skills in building partnerships and promoting common interests of AFHSB and laboratory practices within DoD and with other federal agencies * Assist in supporting the DoD Combatant Commands health surveillance and Force Health Protection needsQualifications: * Bachelors of Science in Medical Laboratory Science/Medical Technology with ASCP certification or equivalent as well as postgraduate training and experience in clinical laboratory science with an emphasis in microbiology, infectious diseases, or public health. * Minimum 5 years of experience in a clinical laboratory. * Prior military service or experience working in the DoD laboratory network and Military Health System preferred * Excellent organizational skills and strong oral and written communication skills * Experience in using Microsoft Office software (MS Outlook; MS Word; MS Excel; and MS PowerPoint) * Ability to collaborate with other professionals * Active Secret clearance preferred.
