Maryland PIRG seeks a Public Health Organizer to lead our campaigns to protect public health by reducing toxic chemicals exposure and the misuse of antibiotics on large farms The Organizer for the Healthy Kids Healthy Maryland and Stop the Overuse of Antibiotics campaigns will advocate with legislators and the Governora s office meet with state regulators plan media events and media outreach run grassroots organizing recruitment fundraising and coalition building to push for solutions that protect public health Medical experts including the World Health Organization are warning that if we dona t stop the overuse of antibiotics they could stop working with potentially grave consequences for public health Maryland PIRG is organizing the public to end the routine use of antibiotics on livestock in Maryland Dangerous chemicals are in our homes schools places of work and the products we use every day The rates of serious chronic health problems like asthma diabetes childhood cancer infertility and developmental disorders are increasing in the United States and science increasingly links the occurrence of these health problems with toxic chemical exposure The primary law responsible for ensuring chemicals are safea the Toxic Substances Control Act TSCA a was passed by Congress in and has never been updated Maryland PIRG is organizing the public to take immediate action on the worst chemicals to protect our families while running corporate and state legislative campaigns that contribute to a national movement towards TSCA reform The Organizer will primarily focus on these issues Additionally the Public Health Advocate will need to be nimble and ready to help represent Maryland PIRG on our entire legislative agenda in Annapolis when needed which includes energy issues consumer protection and reducing the influence of big money in politics Responsibilities As the Organizer with Maryland PIRG youa ll help develop policy solutions and implement a variety of campaign strategies to mobilize the public and influence insiders The Public Health Advocate is responsible for Program development Help develop programs and campaigns including researching the issue creating viable policy solutions and proposing the right political strategy and messaging Advocacy Represent Maryland PIRG in legislative meetings and hearings Build relationships with players in key regulatory agencies the Governora s office the capitol etc Campaign Strategy Develop plans to win our campaigns assess opportunities for building political support for our agenda through coalition building grassroots organizing media coverage and message development Coalition Building Build relationships and mobilize support with key constituencies from health professionals business owners and farmers to local elected officials and families Media Outreach Serve as the spokesperson for our campaigns through tactics like media events press releases and editorial board meetings Fundraising Write grant proposals build relationships with foundation staff and meet with major donors all to bring more resources to our campaigns Managing interns Recruit new interns and volunteers to increase our impact and build our power Oversee interns to develop and implement work plans provide training and leadership development opportunities Qualifications We re looking for a goal driven and results oriented individual who is committed to the public interest a someone with leadership initiative and the verbal and written skills necessary to make the case that protecting public health must be a top priority Candidates should have at least years of relevant professional experience including but not limited to work in political policy legal journalistic or government settings Advanced degrees including aJD or masters in related fields may count toward a candidate s professional experience Compensation Benefits Compensation for this position is commensurate with the relevant professional experience and or advanced degrees that a candidate has Maryland PIRG offers a competitive benefits package Location Baltimore MD To Apply Please apply using our online application at jobs uspirg org Direct your application to Emily Scarr Director of Maryland PIRG Things To Know When You Apply The Public Interest Network is a group of organizations that share a vision of a better future a set of core values and a strategic approach to making positive change Click here for things you should know about our network when you apply Maryland PIRG is an equal opportunity employer and will not discriminate against any employee or applicant on the basis of race color national or ethnic origin religion age sex disability pregnancy sexual orientation gender identity or veteran status Connect With Us Job Inquiries Leigh Anne Cole Email
