We are one of the nation's largest nonprofit providers of quality, affordable housing for low and moderate-income households and persons with special needs.Summary of Essential Functions, Duties & ResponsibilitiesThe Senior Vice President, Legal Affairs - Corporate and Real Estate will provide leadership in corporate and real estate legal matters and provide legal advice and counsel to the organization regarding the same. He/she will serve as senior in-house corporate counsel to the organization providing advice and counsel to the organization on housing operations and housing development matters. The SVP will secure outside counsel as needed, provide legal assistance and training to local offices; along with keeping apprised of legal developments affecting the organization. The SVP will provide legal support in areas of the organization's activities with a legal nexus. Management: Serve as a member of the organization's senior leadership team, and work closely with the President, Chief Operating Officer, and leadership team members to develop and manage strategic direction. Coordinate with Senior Vice President, Legal Affairs - Litigation, Risk and Corporate Compliance to develop and maintain systems for efficiently managing the Office of Legal Affairs, hiring appropriate staff, developing and administering a budget, and ensuring appropriate supervision. Strategize and contribute as a member of the senior management leadership of the entire organization. Knowledge, Skills and AbilitiesGraduation from an accredited school of law; and thorough experience in the practice of law, preferably involving affordable housing and tax exempt organizations law; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the following knowledge, abilities, and skills. Must have knowledge of state and federal laws as they affect Volunteers of America, Inc., with particular attention to affordable housing and tax-exempt charitable and religious organization laws. Thorough knowledge of federal and state administrative procedures and of the roles and authority of applicable regulatory agencies; thorough knowledge of judicial procedures and the methods of legal research. Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of administration, organization, and supervision. Ability to analyze, appraise, and organize facts and applicable laws, court and administrative decisions, and regulations, and to present such information clearly and concisely, orally and in writing, to legal and non-legal persons and groups. Ability to plan, assign, supervise, and review the work of a reporting staff. Ability to prepare, review and comment on the propriety and implication of a variety of legal documents and instruments. Record of success in a decentralized, growing, multi-state service organization and familiarity with the development of community engagement. Consultative style that ensures the transfer or acquisition of knowledge to, from, and among affiliate organizations. Inviting style characterized by responsiveness and accessibility to staff and affiliates. Ability to listen and communicate clearly, effectively and persuasively at all levels of the organization, both orally and in writing. Ability and political savvy to build and sustain relationships with many constituencies, both internal and external, including affiliates, colleagues, and funding sources. Proven ability to lead, direct and support senior level professionals. Ability to think and implement strategically to attain the organization's long range plan. Ability to work flexible hours.
