TEMPORARY ATTORNEY Position Summary: HIAS seeks a Temporary Attorney to assist the General Counsel and Chief Human Resources Officer in legal contract matters and to perform legal research on a range of non-profit issues. This is a three (3) month position with the possibility of an extension based on funding. Essential Functions: Reviews and drafts contracts, compliance information, employment matters and other tasks, for review, as assigned. Creates and updates templates with standard language Perform nonprofit legal research and composes memoranda for staff and leadership within HIAS Acts as a liaison for the company in legal matters and coordinate with outside counsel, as needed. Drafts, reviews, negotiates and interprets complex contracts in compliance with company policies and risk tolerances Interprets and advises on laws and regulations that impact HIAS Participates in projects and initiatives to help identify and mitigate legal risk Assists in the development of new policies and programs, staffing and training process, supervision of subordinates, research and preparation of presentations and reports Manages legal aspects of policies, procedures and processes Interacts with affiliates, vendors and clients, as necessary Supports the continuous improvement of standard form agreements and legal processes Performs other duties, as assigned TEMPORARY ATTORNEY Qualifications and Requirements: Juris Doctor from an accredited US law school and licensed to practice law in the State of Maryland or New York Extensive experience drafting, reviewing and amending contracts entered into with clients and vendors; experience working in the nonprofit sector Flexibility and willingness to work on a broad variety of legal matters, including contracts Ability to manage multiple projects in a fast passed environment; excellent problem solving and organizational skills Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills Fluency in Spanish or French is a plus About Us: HIAS is a global Jewish nonprofit organization working across five continents to ensure that refugees and displaced persons are protected.
