JOB SUMMARY:

This position is located in the Department of Wildlife Health Sciences (WHS), National Zoological Park (NZP), Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C. The incumbent's duties include: (1) providing veterinary technical support in the delivery of health care to a wide variety of non-domestic collection animals located at NZP; (2) completing veterinary tasks and (3) providing clinical laboratory support as a diagnostic tool for health care to insure the proper functioning of the WHS’s Veterinary Hospital and the medical programs in place at NZP.

  • Physical Requirements:This position requires considerable walking, standing, heavy lifting (up to 50 lbs.), stooping, and other types of physical effort and dexterity in moving and distributing animals, animal feed, cage materials, equipment, and in opening and closing cage doors and gates. Although safety measures are taken, there is always a hazard of injury in working with exotic and unpredictable animals, which may be harboring zoonotic infections.

    Qualification requirements must be met within 30 days of the job announcement closing date.

    Experience: You qualify for this position if you possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-8 level in the Federal Service or comparable pay band system. For this position Specialized experience is defined as assisting with the prosection/dissection of dead, non-preserved animals; collecting tissue samples, working with formalin fixed tissues, being exposed to potentially bio-hazardous material, working with sharp instruments, trimming tissues for histological processing, entering in data entry, organizing/tracking samples, writing reports, maintaining a laboratory, and disinfecting.

    Or Education: Two full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's or equivalent degree related to the position may be substituted to meet the experience requirements

    You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

    Your application will be evaluated first for the basic qualifications described above. The applications that meet the basic qualifications will be evaluated further against the following criteria:

    1. Skill working as a veterinary technician in an AZA accredited zoo (or similar) setting.
    2. Ability to perform veterinary clinical support duties on zoo and exotic species.
    3. Ability to operate and maintain veterinary equipment, and fill and dispense veterinary prescriptions and products related to zoo (or similar) animals.
    4. Ability to perform veterinary clinical support on zoo and exotic species and to perform veterinary clinical laboratory testing.
    5. Ability to operate and maintain laboratory equipment.
    6. Skill in communication, interaction and project participation.
    Applicants who meet or exceed minimum qualifications will be assigned to one of three category groups based on job-related criteria: Best Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements and excels in most of the job related competencies above. Better Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements and satisfies most of the job related competencies above. Good Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements, but does not satisfy most of the job related competencies above to a substantive degree. This category rating process does not add veterans' preference points or apply the "rule of three", but protects the rights of veterans by placing them ahead of non-preference eligible within each category. A selecting official may make selections from the highest quality category (Best Category) provided no preference eligible in that category is passed over to select a non-preference eligible in that category unless the requirements of 5 U.S.C. 3317(b) or 3318(b) are satisfied. Preference eligibles who meet minimum qualification requirements and who have a compensable service-connected disability of at least 10 percent must be listed in the highest quality category, except when the position being filled is scientific or professional at the GS-9 grade level or higher.
