Every day, our Information Technology Specialists (Information Security) manage and provide information system security programs and policies, assess system design methodologies, integrate security programs, provide technical guidance, and evaluate new security technologies.

This position of INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY SPECIALIST (INFORMATION SECURITY) (TERM) starts at a salary of $54,972 GS-09 step 01 grade level, with promotion potential to $103,639 GS-12 step 10 grade level.

    Basic Qualifications:
    For all positions individuals must have IT-related experience demonstrating each of the four competencies listed below. The employing agency is responsible for identifying the specific level of proficiency required for each competency at each grade level based on the requirements of the position being filled.

    Oral Communication - Expresses information (for example, ideas or facts) to individuals or groups effectively, taking into account the audience and nature of the information (for example, technical, sensitive, controversial); makes clear and convincing oral presentations; listens to others, attends to nonverbal cues, and responds appropriately.
    Problem Solving - Identifies problems; determines accuracy and relevance of information; uses sound judgment to generate and evaluate alternatives, and to make recommendations.

    GS-09: In addition to the basic qualifications above, you qualify at the GS-09 level if you possess one (1) year of specialized experience, which is equivalent to the GS-07 level in the federal government, that equipped you with the skills needed to successfully perform the duties of the position. You must have experience performing the following duties:
    • Applying basic security principles, practices, and procedures in the administration of an information security program;
    • Assisting in identifying need for changes based on new security technologies or threats;
    • Assisting in the production of communication materials for cybersecurity information sharing. OR:
    • You may substitute a Master's degree or two full years of graduate education leading to such a degree in any field, or a J.D. or L.L.B. degree for experience required at the GS-09 grade level. Such education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university and demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. Check with your school to determine how many credit hours comprise two years of graduate education. If that information is not available, use 36 semester or 54 quarter hours. If you are qualifying based on education your degree must be in computer science, engineering, information science, information systems management, mathematics, operations research, statistics, or technology management or degree that provided a minimum of 24 semester hours in one or more of the fields identified above and required the development or adaptation of applications, systems or networks.
    GS-11: In Addition to the requirements at the lower grade level(s), to qualify at the GS-11 level if you possess one (1) year of specialized experience, which is equivalent to the GS-09 level in the federal government, that equipped you with the skills needed to successfully perform the duties of the position. You must have experience performing the following duties:
    • Identifying need for changes to systems based on new security technologies or threats;
    • Responding to user problems by analyzing and resolving incidents or breakdowns;
    • Producing communication materials for cybersecurity information sharing. OR;
    • You may substitute a doctoral degree (PhD or equivalent degree) or three full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree in any field, or L.L.M. if related for experience at the GS-11 grade level or such education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university and demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. Check with your school to determine how many credit hours comprise three years of graduate study. If that information is not available, use 54 semester or 81 quarter hours. If you are qualifying based on education your degree must be in computer science, engineering, information science, information systems management, mathematics, operations research, statistics, or technology management or degree that provided a minimum of 24 semester hours in one or more of the fields identified above and required the development or adaptation of applications, systems or networks.
    GS-12: In Addition to the requirements at the lower grade level(s), to qualify at the GS-12 level if you possess one (1) year of specialized experience, which is equivalent to the GS-11 level in the federal government, that equipped you with the skills needed to successfully perform the duties of the position. You must have experience performing the following duties:
    • Implementing IT security policies and strategies governing the operation of information systems and networks;
    • Monitoring use of data files or regulating access to prevent or defend against unauthorized access to systems;
    • Identifying and correcting information system security violations, incidents, or breakdowns;
    • Verifying that sensitive or classified information systems meet the appropriate safeguards required by regulations or statutes.
