Senior Communications Associate - Georgetown University Medical Center

Georgetown University Medical Center (GUMC)  is an internationally recognized academic medical center whose missions of research, teaching and patient care are carried out with a strong emphasis on community outreach and the Jesuit principle of cura personalis - care of the whole person. GUMC consists of the School of Medicine, the School of Nursing & Health Studies, Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center, and Biomedical Graduate Research and Education.

The Senior Communications Associate compiles and distributes email newsletters, updates websites, writes new stories, and supports events. Reporting to the GUMC Director of Communications, the Senior Communications Associate has duties that include but are not limited to:

Management of Three Weekly Email newsletters in Constant Contact

  • Tracks upcoming events, news clips, publications, grants, announcements, training opportunities and more for inclusion in email newsletters, verifying details with appropriate individuals as necessary.
  • Puts email newsletters together in Constant Contact.
  • Writes announcements and brief descriptions of stories.
  • Assists in editing and scheduling email newsletters.

Internal and External Websites

  • Uses Drupal to upload content such as news articles and press releases to institutional websites, finds relevant photography, and writes photo captions.
  • Supports website redesign and stays up-to-date on efforts to increase web accessibility.
  • Troubleshoots with colleagues in University Information Services as needed.
  • Posts press releases on Newswise and EurekAlert.
  • Post Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center Director's weekly blog.

GUMC Communications and Media Relations

  • Writes articles about medical center research and events, including occasional nights and weekends.
  • Coordinates photography and take pictures at events.
  • Compiles and drafts reports.
  • Assists with media relations.
  • Escorts reporters and camera crews on campus.
  • Drafts press lists.
  • Participates in weekly editorial calls and staff meetings.

Administration

  • Sends email announcements regarding upcoming events and meetings; update and maintain email lists; and processes invoices.
  • Helps with preparation and organization of meetings and events, including cancer center faculty sector meetings and program leaders meetings; and take minutes at meetings as needed.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree, preferably in communication, journalism, marketing or a related field
  • 1 to 3 years of work experience - preferably in a communications role
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and maturity
  • Ability to take initiative, work well independently and exercise good judgment when dealing with sensitive information
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Editorial judgment, strategic thinking and executive decision-making skills
  • Ability to support editorial functions related to new and recurring events
  • Strong time management and organization skills.
  • Ability to prioritize and work towards short- and long-term goals

Preferred qualifications

  • HTML, Drupal, photography and graphic design skills, as well as experience with Constant Contact, journalism and media relations
  • Interest in, and enthusiasm for, digital and visual communications, health and medicine, and medical research
