Director, Conferences & Visitor Services
The University of Maryland, College Park is the flagship campus of the University System of Maryland. With an enrollment of 27,000 undergraduates and 11,000 graduate students, the University offers degrees to students from across the United States and 133 different countries.
The Director of Conferences & Visitor Services (C&VS) provides the overall leadership and management for the Department which represents the University in welcoming visitors; plans and hosts conferences, events, and summer camps; and operates the University of Maryland Visitor Center. C&VS is in the Division of Student Affairs and partners with Resident Life, Residential Facilities, Dining Services, Transportation Services, Admissions, Athletics, and academic units.
The Director provides strategic leadership to the department: oversees approximately 130 on and off-campus conferences and events and 40 on-campus summer camps including temporary resident housing for more than 18,000 guests and 80,000 bed-nights annually for academic conferences, athletic programs, youth programs, and other activities; and ensures the operation of the UM Visitor Center welcoming more than 70,000 visitors, hosting over 300 admissions sessions, and providing hundreds of campus-wide guided tours each year.
The Director manages a $1.8 million budget including $8 million in revenue and delegated procurement authority of up to $100,000 per contract.
The Director directly supervises 7 staff, indirectly supervises 12 staff who are responsible for event planning, logistics, marketing, service oversight, accounting, and administration; indirectly supervises more than 100 student employees; and indirectly oversees a staff of 135 retired volunteers.
A Bachelor’s Degree, ideally in business, administration, marketing, or related field is required; along with 10 years of progressive leadership and supervisory experience in conference or visitor bureau management, large-scale event planning, or related field. A Master’s Degree in business, administration, marketing, hospitality, higher education, or related field is preferred as is at least 15 years of experience in higher education, financial management, strategic planning, public relations, or business development.
