Managing Attorney The Air Line Pilots Association International ALPA the largest airline pilot union in the world and the largest non governmental aviation safety organization in the world representing over pilots at US and Canadian airlines seeks a Managing Attorney for our Herndon Virginia office Under minimal supervision the Managing Attorney provides legal representation and legal advice to ALPA its officers committees governing bodies and members The Managing Attorney also provides direct supervision to attorneys in the Legal Department as assigned by the General Counsel and Director Legal Department a œGeneral Counsela This management position requires a high level of broad legal knowledge sound judgment skill and experience S he represents the Association in federal and state court litigation at the trial and appellate levels at administrative agencies and in arbitration The position requires a œfirst chaira litigation experience and experience supervising other lawyers The position requires a high degree of competence in the substantive and procedural aspects of such litigation The position also requires the highest level of performance and the ability to handle the most complex litigation as assigned by the General Counsel The Managing Attorney provides legal advice and counsel to pilot leaders at all levels of the Association including National Officers Master Executive Councils MECs ALPA Committees and Governing Bodies This advice includes a wide range of legal matters in various areas of legal expertise including labor law especially the Railway Labor Act and the Landrum Griffin Act various employment discrimination laws and the Federal Aviation Act The Managing Attorney also provides advice on questions of Association policy and governance Along with the Senior Managing Attorneys s he assists the General Counsel in managing the Legal Department in executing Department functions and in overseeing the legal affairs of the Association The Managing Attorney also assists in the implementation of the Legal Departmenta s initiatives under ALPAa s Strategic Plan including risk management and the defense and preservation of ALPAa s assets The Managing Attorney assigns projects to Legal Department staff provides leadership and mentorship and oversees staff performance and development The position also includes responsibility for conducting periodic performance evaluations of Legal Department staff as assigned by the General Counsel At times projects may be time sensitive and of critical importance to the Association and Association issues Working in conjunction with other departments and committees s he will be relied upon to make recommendations regarding strategy and to help guide Association policy litigation and to provide guidance to others Travel at times on short notice is required Local national and international travel Up to Minorities veterans and people with disabilities are encouraged to apply Minimum Requirements Juris Doctor JD or Master of Law LLM from an approved school of law required Member in good standing of the Bar Ten years of related experience in labor law and labor relations practice required fifteen or more years strongly preferred Comprehensive knowledge of labor law required Knowledge of Federal Aviation Act strongly preferred Current and in depth knowledge of and experience in federal and state court litigation and arbitration and mediation required Prior experience supervising attorneys required Demonstrated ability to organize and coordinate long term projects Excellent interpersonal and communication skills oral and written for effective interaction with internal staff external contacts and pilots Demonstrated ability to use independent judgment to formulate decisions and or solve problems under time pressure and urgent conditions Experience using online legal research Westlaw or the equivalent preferred Software Microsoft Word Outlook Excel
