The National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Engineering, and National Academy of Medicine work together as the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine to provide independent, objective analysis and advice to the nation and conduct other activities to solve complex problems and inform public policy decisions. The National Academies also encourage education and research, recognize outstanding contributions to knowledge, and increase public understanding in matters of science, engineering, and medicine.


Founded in 1964, the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) is a private, independent, nonprofit institution that provides engineering leadership in service to the nation. The mission of the National Academy of Engineering is to advance the well-being of the nation by promoting a vibrant engineering profession and by marshalling the expertise and insights of eminent engineers to provide independent advice to the federal government on matters involving engineering and technology.


The NAE is tasked with identifying and illuminating issues at the intersections of engineering, technology, and society that impact our quality of life. Studies, symposia, and public information activities are carried out both independently by the NAE Program Office and jointly with other units of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine.


The NAE's EngineerGirl and Online Ethics Center programs are both public-facing online programs with unique and growing communities. While EngineerGirl targets middle and high school girls with information about engineering careers, the Online Ethics Center provides resources and support for faculty, students, and practitioners on ethically significant issues that arise in science and engineering practice. The website/community manager for these programs will assist with the management of the websites as well as build and engage the online communities while interacting with program office staff to ensure that program materials effectively support the NAE mission.



This is a telecommuting position, our preference is for the successful candidate to be located in DC, Maryland, Virginia, California, Massachusetts or Missouri.

The Website and Community Manager will be responsible for assisting with the management of the websites and for building and engaging with two growing online communities via a combination of the following:


User support

-Answering questions and managing online forums.


Content management and contributor support

-Gathering and editing content submissions and communicating the process to contributors.

-Working with contributors to make sure their submitted articles are ready for the Web.

-Working with companies posting profiles and ensuring they are appropriate for the target audience.

-Managing and executing the content review process for new materials.

-Formatting and posting materials on the Web.

-Occasionally writing information pieces for the web such as blog articles.


Marketing and communications

-Producing online newsletters and other email or social media messages for outreach materials.

-Providing program staff with suggestions for the use of online technologies to streamline processes and increase engagement.

-Identifying appropriate vehicles for reaching target audiences.

-Composing and editing outgoing materials, and ensuring consistent messaging.



-Using site statistics and other tools to track and improve current and future initiatives.

-Other duties may include assistance with events or event planning.





A passion for both ethics and gender diversity in engineering and science. Ability to work well with a wide variety of people from many different disciplines and of various ages, excellent communication skills and creative thinking. Ability to develop effective working relationships with co-workers and employees in other National Academies' departments. Efficiency and ability to complete tasks while maintaining quality of work. Ability to solve problems of some variety and complexity. Superior writing skills and experience with social media. Candidate should hold a bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent knowledge, and at least one year of related professional experience.
