Youth Services Assistant (Library Information Assistant)
Assists all customers with information services and readers' advisory with a focus on children, youth, and teens. Plans and presents programs to children and teens to support early literacy practices and promotes a love of reading. Provides computer assistance and troubleshooting as needed. Participates in the marketing of the youth services collection and assists with collection maintenance. Communicates and interprets library policies and procedures to the public and will be expected to plan and conduct youth programs weekly. Provides outreach to schools and conducts library tours.
Note: The hourly rate offer will not exceed the mid-point (or $30.3206) of the advertised salary range. This announcement will be used to fill vacancies at four libraries - Herndon Community Library located at 768 Center Street, Herndon, VA 20170; Patrick Henry Community Library located at 101 Maple Avenue East, Vienna, VA 22180-5794; Kings Park Community Library located at 9000 Burke Lake Road, Burke, VA 22015-1683; and Centreville Regional Library located at 14200 St. Germain Drive, Centreville, VA 20121-2299
Schedule: These are part-time positions working 20 hours per week. Scheduling flexibility is imperative. The schedule includes evenings and Saturdays as assigned. The position located at Centreville Regional Library works every Sunday.
Community Libraries are open 6 days a week, Monday-Saturday. Regional Libraries are open 7 days a week. Schedule may vary depending on the needs of the library.
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the following: graduation from an accredited four-year college or university plus two years of experience working in a library, bookstore, educational or research setting.
CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
Must love working with children and teens. Experience with planning and conducting children's programs for different ages. Experience providing readers' advisory services especially to children and teens. Strong customer services skills. Demonstrated proficiency in using Microsoft Office Suite applications, including Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to the position will be required to complete a criminal background check and Child Protective Services Registry check to the satisfaction of the employer.
Ability to access, input and retrieve information from a computer. Ability to stoop, bend, reach, and lift books weighing up to 10 pounds. Ability to perform repetitive hand, arm, wrist and shoulder movements. Ability to be physically active for three hours at a time. Ability to push and pull full 4-wheeled book carts and book bins. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
Panel interview; may include an oral exercise.
