Manager, Strategic Research
The Manager of Research will lead AIA’s efforts to continue a more than 60-year legacy of developing and disseminating comprehensive aerospace industry research, both quantitative and qualitative in nature. As the leading association representing American aerospace and defense companies, AIA’s advocacy is heavily dependent on accurate, comprehensive and credible research. The Manager, reporting to the Vice President of Communications, will support the association and its divisions – International, National Security, Civil Aviation, Space, Legislative – and provide key insights and research in support of individual members and the industry.
Core Duties and Responsibilities:
Serves as the central resource and repository for aerospace-related economic and industrial information. Responds to data-related queries from staff and member companies as a priority, and from government agencies, journalists, financial analysts, consultants, academics, and other research organizations as appropriate to advance AIA priorities. Explains the dynamics behind what is driving or shaping facts and trends in the aerospace industry, and provides assessments internally for what these factors could mean for the industry, U.S. competitiveness, and public policy, among other things.
Oversees the implementation of association-wide and division-level studies and research projects in support of the association’s strategic plan. Coordinates with division leads to identify research requirements, and then provides administrative, research and analytical assistance in support of division studies and research projects. Also, oversees and implements association-wide research projects, which include the annual industry economic impact study and special projects related to AIA’s Centennial in 2019.
Authors research-focused articles, blogs and special reports and performs research, both statistical and qualitative, to support congressional testimony, speeches, press materials, reports and papers prepared by AIA staff. Translates statistical, technical and other information into narrative and formats easily understood by target audiences. Sources of information for range from U.S. government sources (e.g., BLS, NASA, DoD, etc.) to private sector sources (e.g., AIA member companies).
Maintains a library and database of current and historical data and cultivates a network of industry and government contacts as data resources. Identifies issues relevant to the aerospace industry that require further study and inquiry, and develops an action plan to investigate identified issues with the relevant departmental lead. Also, supervises the design and maintenance of statistical databases in electronic format.
Oversees and maintains AIA’s historical archives, which include historical documents, artifacts, periodicals, books, and organizational records that span the association’s 100-year history. Will be called on to perform specific research on aspects of AIA’s history in support of association goals and priorities. Supervises the electronic scanning and digitization of AIA’s historical archives in partnership with an external contractor.
Supports AIA’s Membership division through the development and maintenance of member company profiles, market analyses and related products. Provides data and analytical support for C-suite level strategy development and ad hoc assessments. Determines the unique needs of emerging technology and services based companies to better promote AIA and then meet the needs of these companies if they become members.
Ensures all information and data collected, collated, analyzed, and produced are comprehensive, thorough, accurate, properly cited, and credible.
Qualifications and Experience:
- A minimum of five years of experience in research, analysis, insight generation and/or market research, including design, analysis and presentation of results
- Working knowledge of basic and higher-order statistical methods
- Familiarity with a full range of qualitative and quantitative research methods, both via traditional modes as well as developing areas such as social networks, observational tools and online communities
- Strong working knowledge of the industry’s economic, financial and organizational characteristics
- Effective communication skills with a demonstrated ability to synthesize analysis and conclusions in written reports and oral presentations
- Proven ability to interact effectively at all levels within the organization, including senior management
- Ability to prioritize work-streams to achieve multiple objectives concurrently
- Proven ability to negotiate with and motivate external vendors successfully
- Proven track record of designing and managing research projects to support advocacy, educational programming and other efforts
- Experience with relevant datasets, such as those maintained by AIA, the Bureau of Economic Analysis and the International Trade Commission
- Self-starter; ability to work independently and monitor own performance objectives
- Master’s degree or higher in economics, statistics, business, analytics, social sciences, or equivalent work experience required
