Job Type: Full-Time Location: 1015 N. Quincy St., Arlington *METRO-accessible*, Virginia       THIS POSITION IS CONSIDERED ESSENTIAL STAFF AND IS REQUIRED TO REPORT TO WORK DURING SNOW OR OTHER WEATHER-RELATED EMERGENCIES.

Arlington County's Department of Environmental Services is seeking a Custodial Worker II. This immediate vacancy is in the Central Library.

This employee performs a variety of cleaning and maintenance duties including:
  • Cleaning carpets;
  • Stripping, waxing, sweeping, and mopping floors;
  • Vacuuming;
  • Cleaning and stocking restrooms;
  • Emptying office trash containers;
  • Washing, dusting, and polishing furniture;
  • Locking and unlocking buildings;
  • Keeping grounds free of trash including emptying outside trash receptacles;
  • Conducting inventory and replenish cleaning supplies; and
  • Training new custodians.

The employee may also perform some non-routine duties including: setting up conference rooms for meetings; escorting contractors through the facility; and using a snow blower and shovel to remove snow from sidewalks, entrances, and exits.

The qualified candidate must be able to read work schedules and memos; understand and carry out basic instructions; and provide direction to others.
 Selection Criteria: Minimums: Three months of custodial work experience in office buildings, hotels, hospitals, or similar facilities.

Desirables: Preference may be given to candidates with experience in one or more of the following:
  • Using germicidal cleansers, carpet extractors, and shampooing machines;
  • Setting up conference rooms for meetings which involved moving office equipment and furniture; and/or
  • Stripping and waxing floors.

 Special Requirements: Applicant must possess a valid motor vehicle operator's license from the applicant's place of residence. The applicant must authorize Arlington County to obtain, or the applicant must provide, a copy of the applicant's official state/district driving record. Any offer of employment may be contingent upon a favorable review of the applicant's driving record.

The employee must be available for call back during emergencies.

This position requires work that entails stooping, bending, pushing, and pulling supplies, office equipment and furniture weighing up to 50 pounds. Work involves traveling to and cleaning buildings at various locations throughout the County.
 Additional Information: Work location:  Central Library

Work hours: Monday through Thursday, 12:00 noon, to 9:00 pm. with one hour for lunch and Friday, 8:30 am to 5:30 pm with one hour for lunch. Hours and location are subject to change depending upon the needs of the section.
