We are currently searching for a Virology Technician to support the National Institutes of Health. This position is full-time and it is onsite at NIH in Bethesda, MD Major Duties and Responsibilities: Performs a wide range of complex procedures in a BSL2/3 laboratory encompassing influenza virus tissue culture and measurement of antibody-virus interactions. Specific techniques may include, but are not limited to, human peripheral mononuclear cell isolation; immunomagnetic bead purification; multiparameter flow cytometry; immunochemistry, virus culture, virus titration and purification, antibody ELISA and immunoprecipation assays; virus neutralization assays; PCR; DNA plasmid preparation and purification and transient cell transfection Searches scientific literature for new methods and procedures that may be considered for application or modification to selected experiments; selecting the appropriate methodology and procedures to meet the experimental objectives; maintain accurate, daily records of experiments and results in pen in bound laboratory notebooks; making minor modifications or adaptations to established methods, procedures, and/or techniques to solve problems in the work Conducts research under the guidance of the Chief, Viral Pathogenesis and Evolution Section, including planning and conducting of experiments, data analysis and peer reviewed publication of data Calibrates and operates a variety of laboratory instruments used to perform tests, analyses and other procedures Interacts with scientists from other organizations or institutions involved in similar or related research projects Interacts with students, post-doctoral fellows and non-doctoral research technicians on experimental design and laboratory-based methodologies Maintains accurate, daily records of experiments Assists in the analysis and interpretation of data and prepares summaries of laboratory findings to be used in reports and papers to be presented at scientific meetings and/or publication in scientific journals Is responsible for quality control of the lab including upkeep and routine maintenance of equipment. Orders and maintains laboratory supplies and equipment including chemicals, biological materials, liquid nitrogen, etc Responsible for quality control of the laboratory including upkeep and routine maintenance of equipment May be required to handle biological materials, radioactive materials, carcinogens, toxins, infectious agents, recombinant DNA materials, acids, biological wastes, etc May be required to perform computer analysis of data and use computer and computer software to prepare data for publication Virology Technician Position Requirements: BS level research technician with at least two years of laboratory based research experience in influenza virology or closely related field. Candidates should have excellent written skills and experience in oral presentations Professional knowledge of the theories, principles and methods of a scientific specialty or subspecialty and related disciplines, such as biology, microbiology, chemistry, molecular biology, cell biology, immunology, virology, genetics, biochemistry, etc Professional knowledge of and skill in performing a wide variety of complex procedures and techniques, such as cell culture, clinical/diagnostic microbiology, influenza virus growth, titration and purification, flow cytometry and basic molecular biology techniques including DNA and RNA extraction, PCR, RT-PCR, sequencing, cloning and gel electrophoresis Medical Science & Computing is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action employer.
