TITLE: GNA/Medication Technician FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt DEPARTMENT: Assisted Living GENERAL SUMMARY: GNA/Med Technician assists older people who are limited in their functional, physical, and/or social capabilities and need 24-hour oversight. Must be able to assist residents with those activities of daily living that they are unable to perform without help, fostering at all times residents' independence and freedom of choice. All responsibilities will be conducted in a manner that is consistent with the philosophy of Augsburg Village. PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES: I. Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) - Provides assistance with the following Dressing/undressing, assuring that clothing is clean and appropriate Bathing Personal hygiene (shaving, dental care, hair & nail care, foot care, toileting) Mobility devices (cane, walker, wheelchair, crutches) including monitoring of safe transfer and ambulation techniques Care of ADL devices - eyeglasses, contact lenses, hearing aids, etc. Dining (and feeding on emergency basis only) II. Instrumental Activities of Daily Living: Provides assistance with: 1. Telephone 2. Housekeeping tasks as needed, such as vacuuming, emptying trash, cleaning bathroom, bed making, bed changes, sanitizing 3. Laundry 4. Escorting residents, as needed; coordinates internal transportation needs 5. Mail delivery; residents' personal correspondence III. Medication Assistance and Administration 1. Assists residents with self-administration of medications, including monitoring of medication supplies and documentation. 2. Administers medications, if qualified. IV. Health Maintenance and Monitoring Tasks: 1. Observes and reports changes in residents' physical condition and cognitive/emotional status to Director of Assisted Living and Nurse 2. Conducts room checks and resident rounds 3. Monitors for environmental safety hazards and reports same to Director of AL 4. Records incidents, errors, or accidents 5. Records resident and resident-related events V. Dining 1. Assists in variety of tasks related to dining (escorting of residents, setting up and cleaning up tables, serving meals) 2. Assures a gracious dining experience at meals VI. Activity Program: 1. Responsible for participating in and supporting the recreation/activity program 2. May conduct activities on occasion VII. Emergency Preparedness: 1. Responds to and acts appropriately in emergency or disaster situations LEADERSHIP: * Plans and completes duties with minimal direction from supervisor * Works collaboratively with peers and other team members * Uses tactful, diplomatic communication techniques in potentially sensitive or emotional situations * Follows up on reported complaints, problems and concerns * Acts as an ambassador to guests and other visitors * Maintains all certifications required for employment OTHER DUTIES * Demonstrates an appreciation of the heritage, values, and wisdom of elderly residents and understanding of the aging process * Attends and participates in staff meetings * Participates in in-services, projects or committees as assigned * Assists with quality assurance programs when indicated * Assists in training of new staff QUALIFICATIONS * Must be certified as Geriatric Nursing or Certified Nursing Assistant & Medication Technician Must be able to think, act, and intervene independently in both routine and emergency situations. Must be self-motivated and function as an "in-charge person" * Must be able to relate to residents and staff in a courteous and diplomatic manner under all circumstances * Must be able to work flexible hours and participate in holiday activities. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: * Must be able to lift/push up to 50 pounds * Must be able to walk four miles daily * Must be able to lift, carry, stand, bend, squat, crawl, reach and kneel using good body mechanics for sustained periods of time * Must possess sight/hearing sensed, or use prosthetics that will enable these senses to function adequately so that the requirements of this position can be fully met * Must be in good general health and demonstrate emotional stability in order to cope with the physical, mental and emotional stress of the position. WORKING CONDITIONS: Subject to constant walking. Must be able to push, pull, lift, and turn over 50 pounds frequently during shift. Must use proper body mechanics and nursing skills to avoid injury. Potential contact with body fluids. Exposed to safety and infection risks. OSHA Risk Category-I. SAFETY The employee is responsible for following all safety policies and procedures.
