The Air Line Pilots Association, International (ALPA) , the largest airline pilot union in the world and the largest non-governmental aviation safety organization in the world (representing over 57,000 pilots at 33 US and Canadian airlines), seeks an experienced Magazine & Graphic Designer for our Herndon, Virginia, office. The Magazine & Graphics Designer serves as the primary designer for the Association's flagship monthly publication, Air Line Pilot magazine, s/he is responsible for the design, layout, typography, and photography selection, and coordination with print vendors to get the magazine to press on time. Outside of production week, s/he generates original graphic designs for a variety of Association publications and marketing items including newsletters, flyers, posters, and web collateral for ALPA and its pilot groups. To be successful in this position, you must be creative, work well under tight deadlines with minimal supervision, have excellent listening skills, and be able to accurately interpret direction/requests for fast turnaround with quality results. The ideal candidate will have previous experience as an art director or the equivalent. Interested applicants are requested to submit online portfolio link(s) or PDF samples showing previous work. Minimum Requirements: Bachelor's degree in relevant area, eg, Commercial, Fine Art, or Design, from an accredited college or university; or, the equivalent combination of education and practical experience. Five (5) years of magazine and graphic design experience required, seven (7) years or more strongly preferred. Proficient in layout, color theory, typography, publication design principles, and preparing art for press required. Must have knowledge of photo-licensing requirements and be able to acquire permissions as necessary. Expertise with Adobe Creative Suite CS5 or above, particularly InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop strongly preferred. Knowledge of photography and advertising art strongly preferred. Familiarity with web design strongly preferred but not required. Keen attention to detail. Ability to multi-task and work under tight deadlines with minimal supervision required. Must be able to work extended hours during production week. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, oral and written, for effective interaction with staff, vendors, and pilots. May also include occasional bending, stooping, squatting, and/or pushing and pulling or moving, eg, to pack, unpack, and/or move cases. Occasionally required to move, raise, reach, and/or retrieve binders, books, boxes, and files up ten (10) pounds (lbs.). While on travel, could be responsible to move, raise, reach, and/or retrieve binders, boxes, cases, and/or files weighing as much as 25 lbs. (Assistance may not always be available.)
