JOB SUMMARY:

This position is located in the Defense Legal Services Agency, Office of Military Commissions, Military Commissions Defense Organization. The General Counsel, who is the Director of the Defense Legal Services Agency, is appointed by the President and with the advice and consent of the Senate, is the chief legal officer of the Department of Defense and is responsible for all legal services performed within and involving the Department of Defense ( l 0 U.S.C. 140). The General Counsel is the principal legal advisor to the Secretary of Defense on, and has final authority and responsibility for, legal policy and determinations and the delivery of legal services within DoD and its components.

    You may qualify at the GS-13 level, if you fulfill the following qualification requirement:

    One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service that demonstrates your experience in: (1) Managing the work of subordinate paralegals and support staff in litigation environment for hearings, trials, appeals or advisory services; (2) Understanding of the criminal court proceedings, including pre-trial, trial, and penalty phases; (3) Providing legal support for hearings, litigation, appeals or advisory services to the defense team; (4) Analyzing and advising defense teams on the possible legal impact of legislative developments, administrative decisions, and judicial decisions; (5) Developing litigation cases, conducting research for preparation of legal documents, and preparing various legal documents such as motions, notices, affidavits, requests, correspondence, and briefings

    Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
