  • PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The work requires manual dexterity, visual acuity, color vision, regular and recurring physical exertion such as the use of motorized microtome or cryostat, climbing stairs and standing for long periods of time. You will be lifting five (5) gallon reagent containers and other moderately heavy supplies and equipment. You must have a high degree of tolerance and ability to work under stress which at times can be irregular and sometimes constant. Additionally the demand for accuracy and timeliness in reporting results to pathologists responsible for patient care is an ever-present responsibility and a constant concern.

    Work Environment: The work environment is one in which the technologist is constantly associated with potentially highly infectious material such as AIDS, TB, CJD, Legionella and hepatitis. Standard precautions and use of personal protective equipment must be taken seriously and adhered to strictly to minimize or avoid becoming exposed to infections and toxins. Monitored ventilation protects the environment of chemical fumes. The work involves regular and recurring risks and discomforts associated with working in a histology laboratory such as working with hazardous, irritant chemicals such as formalin and xylene, hazardous biological substances, low level radiation and use of sharp microtome and scalpel blades.

    ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position.

    BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: You must first meet Basic Education Requirements for this position. When applying for positions with a Basic Education Requirement you MUST provide official or unofficial transcripts that state a degree was conferred in the appropriate field. For this position the appropriate field is health or allied sciences. You must provide any additional information to support you have met the Basic Education Requirement as outlined where the major field of study is not readily identified.     BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Must possess successful completion of a full four (4) year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree that included a major field of study or specific course requirements related to the health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of this position. (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED)

    SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT: In addition to meeting the basic education requirement, you must also possess specialized experience and/or directly related education to qualify for this position as described below.
    Specialized Experience: Must
    possess one (1) year of specialized experience equipped with the knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the Histotechnologist position. This experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized Experience includes: working experience performing duties associated with a histology section such as collecting, harvesting and processing all controlled material used; performing and overseeing all Immunohistochemical (IHC), direct immunofluorescence (DIF) and In Situ Hybridization (ISH) staining using appropriate controls, multiple detection techniques and multiple instruments; performing routine and special procedures including accessioning, grossing, embedding, microtomy, H&E staining, and special stains to support the histology section; operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting instruments for embedding, cutting, and staining; using skills to cut thin sections of paraffin embedded tissue using a microtome and prepares slides for microscopic examination; preparing, storing, and maintaining inventory of antibodies, reagents, and supplies for IHC staining procedures.     possess two (2) full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree OR a master's degree OR equivalent graduate degree directly related to the work of the position. (One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent one (1) year of full-time study. Part-time graduate education is creditable in accordance with its relationship to a year of full-time study at the school attended). (Transcripts Required)
