JOB SUMMARY:

This position is located in the Smithsonian Institution, Department of Education and Visitor Services (DEVS) in the National Postal Museum, (NPM). The employee assist in the facilitation and implementation of education programming, interpretation, and visitor service effort in the museum.

    Experience:

    You qualify for this position if you possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-4 level in the Federal Service or comparable pay band system. For this position Specialized experience is defined as providing services and assistance in the facilitating educational programs, interpretation and/or culture for a museum, education center, cultural or historic site, recreation site or similar facility which receives large numbers of public visitors.

    Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

    Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week.

    Or Education: 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree.

    Or a Combination: Education and experience may be combined to meet the basic qualifications; for example, a half year of experience and a half year of education in the field may be qualifying.

    You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

    Your application will be evaluated first for the basic qualifications described above. The applications that meet the basic qualifications will be evaluated further against the following criteria:

    1. Knowledge of procedures and practices required to provide good customer service.
    2. Ability to communicate orally to be able to make presentations and provide assistance to visitors.
    3. Ability to communicate in writing to provide information and answer inquiries.
    4. Ability to use various museum technologies to provide information and assistance to visitors.
    5. Ability to work as part of a team and provide direction to volunteers.
    6. Knowledge of museum interpretive practices, educational pedagogy, to be able to facilitate discussion on topics related to the Museum’s collections and research.
