Responsibilities: Gannett Fleming has an opening for a Transportation Engineering Technician to join us in MDOT's Montgomery & Prince George Counties (District 3) in the Washington Metropolitan area to inspect all phases of construction on highway construction and maintenance projects. The Technician oversees, monitors and independently inspects routine highway construction phases for maintenance, bridge, signal installation and roadway construction projects. Measures, tests, and checks materials, methods, and installations to ensure contractor conformance with plans, specifications, and contract documents. Documents contractor progress on a daily basis, inputs data into automated software systems, and generates reports and correspondence.Minimum Qualifications for Transportation Engineering Technician3 years of MDOT experience and knowledge of roadway, structure and bridge construction methods, materials, standards, construction symbols, and terminology.Knowledge of mathematics to include algebra/geometry/trigonometry.Ability to read, interpret, and analyze roadway, structure and bridge plans, as well as contract plans, specifications, and documents.Ability to apply mathematical formulas and engineering principles to determine minor adjustments to construction plans.Ability to maintain detailed records in accordance with MDOT, perform required materials testing, and communicate effectively (written and verbally) with agency and contractor personnel and the general public.Ability to inspect and verify highways work zones and traffic control setups are in accordance with current standards.Skill in the use of engineering and testing equipment and competent in computer and software use (Windows, MS Office Word &Excel, e-mail, and Internet,)Physically able to lift and carry 40 pounds (testing equipment), safely navigate construction work sites with uneven terrain , stand and sit as needed on project work sites, climb ladders, and work at heights.*CB High school graduate/GEDValid driver's licenseConstruction inspection experience with a DOT or consultant inspection firm or a combination of education/training/experience in construction including design build, engineering, project management, or materials handling which demonstrates the ability to perform the work.Possesses the following Certifications - Asphalt Field I & II, Temp. Traffic Control, ACI Concrete Field, Soils & Aggregate Field, and Pavement Markings.Other certifications: Fall protection and confined space training, Guardrail Installation, OSHA Safety, Nuclear Safety & Transportation, Work Zone Traffic Control (intermediate level) and flagger certification, Erosion & Sediment Control Inspection and Stormwater. Other specialty certifications may include WACEL, ICC, NICET, NACE, and CMIT (Construction manager in training) are a plus.Will be required to work outside normal hours to observe contractors' progress, as well as in emergencies, inclement weather, and heavy traffic conditions. Ability to work at heights and within confined spaces. May be required to operate or work in the vicinity of devices containing radioactive materials and emitting low levels of ionizing radiation.
