Job Description University of Maryland, Baltimore currently has multiple openings for a Senior Architecture/Engineering (A/E) Project Manager. The selected candidate will provide direction and control of multiple, simultaneous assigned design and construction capital and non-capital projects from conception to completion. Organize and control project resources, schedules, and costs. Act as liaison between internal clients, including executive management, and external consultants, contractors and regulatory agencies. Provide advanced technical expertise in the direction of professional fields such as architecture, structural, electrical and/or mechanical engineering. Perform technical review of consultant designs within professional discipline. One of the available positions will be filled by a Mechanical Engineer/Project Manager to manage a large portfolio of an on-going mechanical infrastructure projects. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS\: Direct the development, implementation, and evaluation of the most complex designs for construction projects of the largest size (>$50M); direct, review, and approve design changes. Oversee and conduct the review of consultant design submissions within professional discipline at interim submissions, provide written review comments, and conduct advanced professional analysis of consultant submissions to determine compliance with University requirements. Review and manage all design activities and interface with key cross-functional groups. Plan and establish schedules and follow up performance against estimates. Apply design expertise to ensure accuracy of drawings and adherence to established organizational standards and objectives. Utilize design principles and methodologies to research design options and to determine potential design feasibility or application. Manage the creation of construction documents and other engineering data. Perform analysis and design for projects and produce design drawings and specifications for bidding. Prepare addenda during bidding phase and change documentation as needed during the construction phase. Research technical options and alternatives and propose solutions. Manage compilation of cost control and statistical data. Manage development of material selection standards. Approve project specification and design standards. Report project status for the assigned projects. Review materials and methods, questions, conflicts, and changes. Manage client issues in relation to construction decisions and preferences. Record relevant and/or outstanding issues in project and/or technical specialty databases/ reports. Direct individual design and construction projects of all sizes and levels of complexity. Develop architecture and engineering scopes of work, review and negotiate fee proposals, manage design and construction progress schedules. Coordinate document distribution processes to internal and external team members. Provide visual inspection and quality control by monitoring construction progress. Ensure compliance with intended results, codes, regulations, and requested standards. Ensure projects meet environmental, safety, structural, zoning and aesthetic standards. Prepare budgets, bids, and contracts, and direct the negotiation of contracts. Provide support and/or technical advice to other departments and schools throughout the University system. Participate in interviewing and hiring contractors for proposed projects. Manage departments people, budgets, and other resources to effectively meet client needs. Represent D&C to the Universitys Executive Management. BA/BS required, in one of the following options\: Architecture, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Structural, or Architectural Engineering Eight (8) years of experience in project design, management, implementation, and assessment; and construction of institutional or commercial building projects. A mechanical engineering background is highly preferred. Certification/Licensure\: Licensed Architect, Licensed Professional Engineer or CMAA Certified Construction Manager preferred. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES Demonstrated knowledge of the best practices in the application of architectural/engineering to facility design and constructability. Knowledge of best practices in design and construction processes and multiple project delivery methods including Design-Build and Construction Management at Risk. Understanding of design and construction contracts. Skill in managing and supervising design and construction staff and the ability to mentor subordinates. Proven leadership skills. Ability to work independently. Skill in prioritizing ongoing and new projects, as well as facilitating the timely completion of construction phases. Skill in liaising with external agencies, campuses, or other high level contacts. Ability to effectively communicate and negotiate with a broad range of internal and external individuals or agency representatives. Skill in continuously seeking to improve the quality of services and process improvements. Computer skills in relevant design and office applications. Ability to evaluate alternative designs and associated costs. Skill in coordinating design concepts with other architectural and engineering disciplines. Computer skills in relevant design and office applications, including AutoCAD, BIM, Revit, and Microsoft Project preferred. Ability to address multiple tasks, technical issues, and contingencies simultaneously. Ability to evaluate and negotiate proposals, design and construction modifications and change orders. Ability to communicate and interact with, as well as support effective partnerships with, peers and subordinates.
