This position is located in the Exhibits Production division of the Office of Building Renovation and Exhibition Services (OBRES) at the National Museum American History (NMAH), Smithsonian Institution (SI). You qualify for this position if you possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 level in the Federal Service or comparable pay band system.
For this position specialized experience is defined as fabricating, installing and dismantling complicated exhibition components; wood and metalworking; machining metal; creating and reading drawings, blueprints, layouts, mock-ups, models, sketches, and or other design specifications.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week.
Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree

- Skill in fabrication, machining, wood and metalworking, and finishing techniques and materials needed to fabricate, install, and dismantle exhibit components.
- Ability to create/draft, read, interpret and modify drawings, blueprints, layouts, mock-ups, models, sketches, and other design specifications.
- Ability to work in and contribute to a team oriented environment.
- Skill in using computer software to create and modify drawings, blueprints, layouts and other design specifications
- Knowledge of the material types needed for the creation of materials lists and costs/bids for materials to fabricate exhibit components.
