Student Trainee (Legal)
The Office of Counsel to the Inspector General (OCIG) is recruiting for 2018 Summer OIG Legal Interns with a demonstrated interest in health law and health care fraud and abuse. OCIG promotes the mission of OIG through timely, accurate, and persuasive legal advocacy and counsel to OIG's investigators, auditors and evaluators, and its law enforcement partners in the Department of Justice and the United States Attorney's Offices.
OCIG is divided into three branches. The Administrative and Civil Remedies Branch handles civil fraud and abuse cases involving Medicare, Medicaid, and other programs; works with the Department of Justice in the global resolution of civil False Claims Act cases; initiates administrative cases under the Civil Monetary Penalties Law; and defends the decision to exclude providers from participation in Federal health care programs. The Industry Guidance Branch issues advisory opinions to the public and the health care industry on whether an activity constitutes grounds for sanction under the Anti-Kickback Statute, or other authorities, and provides legal advice to HHS and the Department of Justice on the Anti-Kickback Statute. The Advice Branch provides legal advice on issues such as the scope and exercise of OIG's authorities and responsibilities; investigative procedures; audits and inspections; and the impact of legislative proposals.
These positions are for current students enrolled at least part-time in a law (J.D.) program at an American Bar Association accredited law school, who have completed at least two full years of law school by the beginning of the internship. Joint-Degree students who are simultaneously completing a J.D. degree and a graduate degree (whether an LL.M or non-legal graduate degree) may also apply.
This is an excepted service appointment under the OIG Internship Program and is not to exceed September 30, 2018. This appointment does not allow for non-competitive conversion to a term or permanent appointment in the federal service.

Internship Eligibility Requirements:
Current students enrolled in a law (J.D.) program at an American Bar Association accredited law school enrolled at least part-time, who have completed at least two full years of law school by the beginning of the internship. Current, joint-degree students who are simultaneously completing a J.D. degree and a graduate degree, who have completed at two full years of law school.
This positions includes a Selective Placement Factor. Applicants must have had coursework or experience in health care.
To qualify for the GS-09 grade level, the applicant must have 2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree.
Note: 18 semester hours is equivalent to 1 year of graduate education.
